With a new coach as the helm, Gholson’s Cardinals are off to a 6-2 start, and the talented wing is averaging a team best 20.6 points per game – also a team high 6.1 rebounds per game.
A good-sized sharpshooter, with the ability to put the ball on the floor, Gholson has seen some recruitment come in – from Division II and Division III programs.
“I’ve gotten a couple letters from some D2s; Wayne State being one of them. And I’ve gotten some letters from some D3s like Coe, and Central. My coach is from Seattle, and he’s got some coaching friends out there that he said he’s going to put me in contact with,” said Gholson, who says his recruitment will be a priority for him come spring.
“I’m thinking about it a little bit, I’ll think about it more in March and April when my 17U season starts, but I’m thinking about it a little bit right now.”
Gholson was slightly injured all of his sophomore season after sustaining a dislocated knee early in the season. He says his explosiveness is back, and it’s making a difference.
“Last year, early, I dislocated my knee – so that took away my athleticism, and my ability to drive to the basket. Then last offseason I put on about 15 pounds and got a little taller, a higher vertical, and I’m getting to the basket a little easier now. I’m a more complete player now than I was,” said Gholson.
“I want to work on guarding point guards, quicker point guards. So I’m working on my lateral quickness a lot right now.”
Already thriving during his junior season, Gholson says his role is to be the go-to guy on this Newton team.
“We got a new coach and his style of play is a lot of set plays, and a lot are run for me. And then I’m usually guarding one of the taller wings on defense,” said Gholson.
“I just want to stay healthy, and being all-state would be pretty cool – but I really just want to win.”
