“I play hard all the time,” Brandon said. “I have a high motor. A good point guard makes the right decisions and puts his team first. I can knock down the open shot and get to the basket.”
Brandon fills in as full-time point guard this season after Mike Smith ran the show last year. It’s taken a change in style to perform at a high level.
“I’m taking on more of a leadership role,” Brandon said. “A lot is being put on me to make it happen and lead us to victory.”
For Bedford, this is the last hurrah for a senior-laden group. The Bearcats made the district semifinal last season and would like to take things much further in 2016.
“We have good chemistry,” Brandon said. “We’ve been playing together since middle school. We know what we can and can’t do, and we know our strengths and weaknesses. We just play for each other.”
Unfortunately for Bedford, the season hasn’t gotten off to a tough start with three losses already, but the Bearcats are trying to right the ship and Brandon is putting it on himself.
“We can’t play down to the competition,” Brandon said. “We need to control the pace of the game, limit turnovers and make free throws. We need to play with more energy to get the job done.”
Despite his strong play for Bedford, Brandon has not received much college interest, but he’s ready to make his pitch for the next level.
“I’ll go in and do the little things,” Brandon said. “I can play hard and put defense first. I can bring something new to a team that they probably didn’t have.”
Brandon compares himself to Boston Celtics guard Isaiah Thomas and believes that he too can pack a punch with a smaller frame.
“I try to mold my game around his,” Brandon said. “He plays under control, makes the right passes and can score the ball for his team.”
