The senior is averaging 21.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per game so far this season, and also leads his team in assists, steals and blocks.
But what really sets him apart, is that he’s already committed to a school, not with a sports scholarship in tow, but just academically – for now.
“I have committed to UNI just to be a student right now, but I have an opportunity to earn one of the walk-on spots on the basketball team. I’m going to go back in March for a follow-up visit with them,” said Heller.
“I decided I wanted to go to UNI because I wanted to pick a school before I picked a sport. I know of a lot of kids who picked a school based around a sport and then ended up not liking the school. So I just wanted to pick a school before I picked a sport.”
The talented guard explained his playing style to PHI, and says his good size and aggressiveness are his best attributes.
‘I consider myself a pretty good slasher, and I get to the basket pretty good, and I get to the line. I’m normally bigger than other guards I play against because I get in the weightroom a lot. I think I’m a pretty good jump-shooter too, and that’s come along nicely this year,” said Heller.
“I need to continue to get my jump-shot better, and then just continue to get stronger and faster.”
Though his Pioneers have struggled this season, off to a 4-12 start, Heller has been a bright spot in the otherwise bleak season.
“My job is to pretty much be a facilitator. A lot of the plays are pretty much designed for me to score, or for me to get an open look for somebody else,” said Heller. My job is to get a lot of rebounds, and assists, and to push the ball up the floor, and to talk on defense.”
