At one point he racks up 11 of SCL’s 17, but a 10-0 Waverly-Shell Rock run puts the Go-Hawks right back into the first half conversation. SCL plays a little catch up and is only down one bucket at half, 26-23.
SCL goes up in the second and cruises, winning 69-57. Murkey pummeled WSR with lay-in after lay-in, and WSR’s top guy — UNI-signed junior Austin Phyfe — had just 12, being largely limited by SCL’s defensive efforts.
Player Notes
Venkat Valluri, St. Croix Lutheran — Two airballs early looked ugly, but he’s valuable to SCL as a rotation guy who they can usually trust with the ball. I’m glad he didn’t let those early mistakes affect him, as he came out in the second half and cashed a corner 3 to restore some confidence.
Ade Murkey, St. Croix Lutheran — Despite looking to transition into more of a wing role at the next level, Murkey’s strength in the post is needed and effective. He essentially plays power guard at this point, bringing the ball down and wasting no time in setting up in the paint. Really nice first half as he was efficient and strong down low. A couple hammer dunks capped this one for him. 26 pts
Aage Rovney, St. Croix Lutheran — Not as many 3s today from the bomber, but a few moments of really nice ball control and a couple good takes to the rim. You like to see that from a kid who you know can shoot… rounding out his game.
Jamaris Johnson, St. Croix Lutheran — Raw but long junior forward who combines with Krueger and Murkey to create a pretty big frontcourt for a Class AA team. I thought he was a bit unpolished early on, but he showed flashes with a block off the backboard, a one-handed tip-in and a transition dunk all in a matter of minutes.
Camry Moore, Waverly-Shell Rock — Have to love a kid named after my car of choice. Both he and Christian Mosley are scrappy seniors who aren’t the tallest kids, but they’ll score on you with no hesitation. 20 pts to lead WSR.
