Trailing by four after the first quarter, Monticello opened the second quarter with a quick 10-0 run, and North Linn star freshman Jake Hilmer picked up his second and third fouls quickly, sending him to the bench. The run extended to 20-4, giving Monticello a 29-17 lead and the Lynx were forced to bring Hilmer back in. He picked up his fourth foul before the break, and that was the ball game. Monticello won the second quarter 30-10 and never looked back.
North Linn (10-1) was led by Jake Hilmer, the lone Lynx in double figures with 16 points. He was dazzling in limited minutes, showing why he’s one of the top freshmen in the state.
Monticello (6-4) had three players in double figures, led by Derek Manternach, who had 24 points and 10 rebounds. Matt Manternach added 18 points and seven rebounds, and Jesse Iben had 10. The Panthers shot 54.3% from the floor in the win, and showed why they were projected as one of the top teams in Class 2A before the season started. They’re starting to get healthy and should be a team to watch out for moving forward.
