Iowa Rank ‘Em: Top Freshman Scorers
1 Jake Hilmer, North Linn 16.9 PPG
What the coach’s son is doing as a freshman is astonishing. He’s among the state’s leaders – regardless of class – in assists, averaging 9.1 per game, and he swipes 5.1 steals per game for good measure.
2 Jackson Molstead, Charles City 16.1 PPG
Like Hilmer, Molstead is an Iowa Barnstormer product, he’s a 5-foot-10 point guard, and leads his team in scoring and assists.
3 Daymeon Virgil, Clarinda Academy 15.3 PPG
T3 Mason Porter, Northwood-Kensett 15.3 PPG
5 Jace Davidson, Pocahontas Area 15.3 PPG
An Indians team that already features top 2016 and 2017 prospects – Tanner Youngberg and Austin Roetman respectively – can now add a top 2019 prospect into the mix.
6 Beau Cornwell, West Branch 14.9 PPG
A former Iowa Barnstormer, Cornwell erupted for 46 points in a win over Mid-Prairie, Wellman on Dec. 19. That’s the best single-game scoring performance of the season so far.
7 Will Clapper, C-M-B 14.1 PPG
8 Jack Kelley, Don Bosco 14 PPG
9 Ty Houston, West Harrison 13.7 PPG
10 Austin Simpson, Fairfirld 13.1 PPG
Simpson plays at a 3A school, where it is definitely more difficult to break-in and lead a team in scoring as a freshman. He’s not only leading the Trojans in scoring, but rebounding too. The 6-foot-4, 248 pound bruiser is also 3-6 from beyond the arc this season.
11 Kylan Smallwood, Crestwood 12.4 PPG
T11 Tyreke Locure, Des Moines North 12.4 PPG
We knew he’d be a special player when we first saw him play at the Norwalk Team Camp last summer, and he’s exceeding those expectations; 12.4 points, 7.6 assists, 3.6 steals per game – against the state’s top competition.
13 Parker Hitt, Mormon Trail 12.3 PPG
14 Grant Brouwer, Sibley-Ocheyedan 11.3 PPG
15 David Seber, North Linn 11.2 PPG
