Hoover
Every year the Huskies are among the elites in 4A, no matter who they lose from the year before or what the personnel. This year is no exception, and if there was any doubt that there was, the Huskies erased it with an impressive 57-52 road win over fellow top-5 Ankeny last Friday night.
Chariton
It’s one thing to feature one of the state’s most prolific duos with TJ Hockenson and Daric Laing, but now there is a legitimate three-way threat in Chariton. Junior small forward Lim Chuol recorded three straight triple-doubles last week, and he has the Chargers rolling this season.
Dike-New Hartford
The ultimate balanced team, Dike-New Hartford’s leading scorer is Ben Latusak, who averages 11.5 points per game. He’s also the leading rebounder, with just 6.7 per game. Pretty underwhelming numbers from your team leader. But the Wolverines go 12-deep, and that’s an invaluable luxury in this ultimate team sport.
Valley
They’re back on top as 4A’s No.1 in the AP poll, and they deserve it after an 11 point – come-from-behind – win over 3A’s top-ranked team, Pella. The Tigers have been cruising all season, but will be majorly tested at the end of this month with three straight against Ames, Dowling, then Ankeny.
Spirit Lake
They started the season in the “Down” portion of this series, but have come back strong – very strong. Ryan Kriener and Billy Brown have cracked the code to dominance, and they have the Indians soaring – winners of seven straight, including wins over Spencer, LeMars and Sioux City North, by an average of 27 points.
Down
SC North
It would be tough to live up to the state tournament teams of recent history, but after a 4-1 start it appeared maybe the North Stars would be right there again. But four straight losses, including a 32 point drubbing by 2A’s Spirit Lake has them officially reeling.
Indianola
There weren’t a lot of expectations placed on the Indians coming into the season, and the schedule has been relatively tough (DM North, Ankeny, Hoover). But still, a 1-8 start is probably not what the Indians expected. Tonight they host a 2-6 Des Moines East squad, in what should be a winnable game.
Bishop Garrigan
A 2-0 start has given way to eight losses out of 10, and the Golden Bears looking for answers. The good news is Belmond-Klemme comes into town tonight, a team the Golden Bears beat by 36 back on Dec. 1.
Des Moines Lincoln
It’s been some time since the Railsplitters were a formidable threat in the CIML’s Metro Conference (circa 2008). And this year is another down one on Des Moines’ south side. The Rails lost by 31 to an Urbandale club that had dropped six straight coming into the game. And they lost by 18 to Des Moines East (2-6) last Tuesday.
Boone
With some nice talent that shone through last offseason we though it may be sooner rather than later when the Toreadors would show some prowess. But after a 3-6 start to the season, including an eight point loss to lowly Winterset last week, it looks like we’ll have to wait another season to see Boone potentially make some noise.
