Roosevelt
Two things have happened here: One, the Roughriders’ brutal early-season schedule has turned a little more forgiving, and two, head coach Charles Zanders has his guys playing with a ton of confidence. They’ve now won six of seven after a 1-5 start – including a 5OT thriller over Cedar Rapids Washington on Saturday.
Montezuma
One of eight unbeaten teams remaining in the state, Montezuma has now run their win streak to 15 straight. Junior Dakota Strong is leading the way for the Braves, averaging a team best 17.2 points. They are winning by an average margin of 32 points.
Earlham
Canyon Hopkins and Co. are rolling right along after a middling 3-2 start, winners of nine straight, they’ve pushed their record to 12-2. A 73-48 win over 10-5 Panora last week was the crown jewel of the nine game streak.
St. Edmond
After dropping two straight games early in the season to Des Moines Christian and Algona, the Gaels have now won nine straight. Tonight their win streak is put to the test when they travel to Algona; the Bulldogs won that game by 12 in December.
Southeast Valley
Dakota Jaeschke is averaging a double-double for the Jaguars (14.5 points, 10.5 rebounds), and he has his team rolling right now – winners of 12 straight after a 1-2 start to the season. Tonight the Jaguars will have their hands full when a supremely talented Pocahontas Area (12-2) team comes into town.
Down
Dubuque, Wahlert
A team as talented as the Golden Eagles should probably never drop consecutive games, regardless of who they’re playing. That’s just what happened last week when they lost to Dubuque, Senior and Linn-Mar. Still, we have to consider Wahlert the favorites in 3A.
Western Dubuque, Epworth
They were rolling along through the first half of the season accumulating an 8-4 mark, including nice wins over Anamosa and Mount Vernon. But have since lost three straight, and will try and right the ship tonight at Central Clinton.
Saydel
The Eagles are still winless this season, off to an 0-14 start. In their defense, the schedule has not been friendly; 10 of their 14 opponents have winning records. Tonight they’ll try for their first win against a tough North Polk team that beat them by 14 in December.
Iowa Falls-Alden
Like others on this list, the Cadets have fallen victim to a very tough schedule. Last week was especially tough against Webster City and Algona. It’s now seven straight losses for the Cadets, who will travel to Clear Lake tonight to try and get back in the win column.
Clarinda
There are eight winless teams remaining in Iowa, two of them are on this list. Clarinda is now 0-15 after dropping two more last week to Sidney and Atlantic. The Cardinals have struggled on the defensive end in particular this season, allowing 73 points per game.
