The final full basketball week of the calendar year is upon us starting Monday and there is plenty to discuss as teams prepare for the final stretch before a school holiday break as 2015 comes to a close.
Let’s take a look at seven teams or players trending upward in the Cincinnati area this week:
- Purcell Marian – The Cavaliers (6-0) have been at the top of our feature in Seven Up most of the month and that continues this week. Purcell defeated rival Roger Bacon 63-61 on Dec. 11. Senior 6-1 guard Rashaad Ali-Shakir and senior 6-4 forward Jordan Gaines have been excellent in the backcourt. The frontcourt is led by senior 6-7 center Kameron Moore (13.5 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per game) along with senior 6-4 forward Jamel Howard (11.3 ppg.).
- Frankie Hofmeyer, Elder – The 6-foot senior guard averages 23 points through the Panthers’ three games. Elder (3-0) plays host to Purcell Marian (6-0) Tuesday night. Hofmeyer had 27 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists in a 58-53 win at Walnut Hills Dec. 12. He was 13 of 14 from the free-throw line. He had 15 points and four rebounds in a win over Northwest earlier in the week.
- Luke Rudy, Cincinnati Oak Hills – An excellent shooter, the 2017 6-4 forward scored 46 points in two games this past week. He had 21 points and seven rebounds in a 70-55 win over Middletown Dec. 11. He had 25 points, 11 rebounds and four assists in a 67-45 win at Fairfield earlier in the week.
- La Salle – The Lancers were without Mr. Football finalist Jeremy Larkin on Saturday, but La Salle had junior guard CJ Fleming. La Salle improved to 2-0 with a 58-37 win over visiting Hamilton. Fleming, who is 5 feet 11, is verbally committed to Bellarmine. He had 23 points and six rebounds Saturday night, including 7 of 7 from the free-throw line. La Salle plays host to Withrow on Tuesday.
- Darius Bazley – The Finneytown 2018 6-7 point guard had 17 points, 14 rebounds six assists and five blocks in a 72-56 win over Lockland Dec. 7. Finneytown defeated Deer Park 66-37 Dec. 11 to improve to 3-2 this season. Bazley picked up an offer from Toledo – his first scholarship offer – earlier this season.
- Wyoming – The Cowboys are a force in a Division II and easily a team to watch at the start of 2016. Junior 6-1 guard Lonnie Grayson had 19 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals in a 56-33 win over Taylor Dec. 11. Grayson, who has an offer from Ashland, had 22 points and five rebounds against Hughes earlier in the week. Wyoming (5-1) defeated Seven Hills Saturday night.
- Moeller – The Crusaders were ranked No. 1 in the area preseason poll and Moeller has taken care of business thus far. Junior guard Keegan McDowell had 21 points, four rebounds and two assists in a 68-42 win over Mount Healthy Saturday. Moeller faces a challenging schedule next week with Oak Hills (Dec. 22) and then a trip to the Beach Ball Classic after Christmas.
