We’ll take a look at our season’s first team power rankings next week.
Let’s take a closer look at who is trending locally this week:
- Jarron Cumberland, Wilmington: The Mr. Basketball candidate and University of Cincinnati signee had 30 points in a 97-49 win over Greenfield McClain. He had 37 points and 34 points in his first two games, respectively. “He’s a dominant player,” University of Cincinnati coach Mick Cronin told the Bearcats Sports IMG Sports Network.
- Purcell Marian: The Cavaliers are the first Cincinnati-area team to reach a 4-0 record. Purcell Marian had a 62-53 win over Kettering Alter Dec. 4. Purcell Marian senior guard Rashaad Ali-Shakir had 28 points including seven 3-pointers. Purcell Marian plays at Dayton Carroll (4-0) Tuesday.
- Moeller: The top-rated Division I team in the Cincinnati Enquirer area coaches’ poll is 2-0 after wins over Kings and Ryle (Ky.). Senior guard Nate Georgeton (Northwood signee) had 11 points, six assists and three steals in the 59-43 win over Ryle Dec. 4. Sophomore guard Isaiah Payton, who already has early offers, had 13 points off the bench for the Crusaders. Moeller plays host to Mount Healthy Dec. 12.
- Middletown: The Middies defeated Sycamore and Fairfield last week to start the season 2-0. Junior guard Cliff Snow had 20 points, eight rebounds and two blocks to lead the Middies past Fairfield 69-54 Dec. 4. With 2016 point guard Kobie Johnson and 2018 center E.J. Williams, this is a team to watch.
- Frankie Hofmeyer, Elder: The senior guard had 29 points including 6-of-6 on 3-pointers in a 65-45 win over visiting Winton Woods Dec. 4. The uncommitted guard is definitely one to watch this season for the heralded Panthers, who are expected to be one of the top teams in the region this season.
- Mason: The Comets had two quality wins last week (defeated Lakota West 56-39 Dec. 1 and Lakota East 56-47 Dec. 4). Balanced scoring and solid first-half defense has helped the Comets. They outscored West 20-5 in the fourth quarter. Watch for games versus Sycamore Dec. 8 and at Hamilton Dec. 11.
- Blake Southerland, Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy: The 2016 guard had 28 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in a 79-67 win over Clark Montessori Dec. 4. He had 10 points and a team-high five assists in the game against North College Hill Dec. 1.
