C.J. Neville was on fire for Rock Island in the first half, scoring 18 points on 6-7 from the arc, as Rock Island jumped out to a 35-27 lead at the half. That lead extended to 13 points, 40-27, with 6:10 left in the third quarter.
Then Pleasant Valley coach Steve Hillman made the adjustment to go to a 1-3-1 zone, and the Rocks scored just seven points over the last 14:10 of action. The Spartans didn’t have the quickness on the perimeter to slow down Rock Island, so they utilized their length and size by going to the zone, and Rock Island had no answer.
Carter Milam led the Spartans (7-0) with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Will Carius added 18 points and eight rebounds. After turning it over eight times in the first half, a more calm Spartan group committed only two second half turnovers.
