Continue ReadingAnamosa small forward Tyler Zumbach broke his fibula during a scrimmage against Dubuque Hempstead just before the season started, and will be out until early January.
He did play in Anamosa’s season opener later in the week, after the injury. But could only play two quarters before the pain kept him on the bench.
After visiting the doctor later that week, the broken fibula was revealed. Good news for Zumbach though, the recovery process will be relatively short.
“Luckily I should be back the first week January, it’s a short recovery time,” he said. “My physical therapist is going to have me work on the bike, some pool exercises, just anything I can do to keep myself in shape, so when January comes, I’m ready to go.”
The versatile 6-foot-5 forward, considers himself a point-forward, and says he’ll likely play shooting guard or small forward at the next level.
“As a 6-foot-5 athlete, I can get up the floor pretty quick and I have good ball-handling skills. I create mismatches; I can post up, and I can shot the 3-ball,” said Zumbach. “And also my coach always puts me on the best player on defense, I strive for defense. So my strengths are the mismatches I create, and my defense.”
After a strong junior season and a summer gaining exposure with Iowa Mavericks, Zumbach has been hearing from plenty of area Division III and NAIA schools, also one in-state Division I.
“I’ve gotten a lot of interest from a lot of the D3s around; University of Dubuque, Loras, Coe College, Edgewood (WI), they’ve all showed a lot of interest,” said Zumbach. “And my coach has emailed back-and-forth with UNI thinking walk-on possibility.”
He mentioned NAIAs Mount Mercy, and Clarke had been showing some interest also, and says he has no particular preference between D3 and NAIA.
“Whatever I think suits me best for basketball,” said Zumbach, who is eager to get back on the floor in January.
“When this (injury) happened to me the first thing I thought about was recruiting, I thought this might negatively impact that,” he said. “But when I get back, I plan on having a big year still, and I don’t think recruitment will be much of an issue with this little break.”
