With a 6-foot-5 frame and one of the sweetest strokes in the state, Spencer shooting guard Preston Funderburg is likely to make a college program very pleased over the next four seasons.
Currently the good-sized sharpshooter holds three NAIA offers, and is also starting to hear from some Division II programs.
“A lot of the GPAC schools have contacted me, also Buena Vista, Central, and Graceland University. Also Wayne State and University of Sioux Falls have been in contact with me,” said Funderburg. “I met with the Northwestern coach, and also the Dordt, Morningside and Nebraska Wesleyan coaches.”
Funderburg mentioned that Dordt, Morningside, and Graceland have extended him offers, and says the D2 schools started talking to him last summer.
“After a recent shootout Wayne State started talking to me. And Sioux Falls started talking to me right around the middle of the summer, they’ve been calling me,” said Funderburg, who says his priorities lye with his high school team right now, and not thinking about his recruitment.
“This winter is really about our team I feel, we really want to make it to state bad. And I feel if we do that than I could possible get more looks, so that’s the goal.”
Funderburg averaged 13.1 points per game last season and connected on 45 percent of his 3-point attempts — he’ll look to increase his production this season.
“I think my biggest role is being a shooter, being able to spot up and stretch the floor. I think I can be one of those guys that’s not just a shooter but I can put the ball on the floor,” he said. “And on the defensive end I feel like I can be one of those guys that is a lock down defender, and really help out on defense.”

Spencer and Cornsharks Select shooting guard Spencer Funderburg is a 6-foot-5 sharpshooter, and one of 2016s most under-recruited prospects.
Even with his great size, and after connecting on 45 percent of his 3-point attempts last season, he’s still only heard from two schools. Area NAIAs Morningside and Dordt have been the only two to show interest so far.
Funderburg says the goal is Division II, though he has his sights set on one Division I Summit League school.
“D2 would probably be my goal, but I really do like SDSU (South Dakota State University), so I’m going to their camp, and hopefully I can get some looks,” said Funderburg.
His brother attended SDSU and lives in Brookings where the college is located. And Funderburg attended junior day there earlier in the year — the camp he’ll be attending is in June.
The Jackrabbits can expect a fundamentally sound marksman, with an added ability to get to the hoops and D up.
“I thought shooting was what I was best at this season, but I think I got better as the season went on at defense and getting to the basket,” said Funderburg.
“I’d like to get really good at getting to the basket and finishing in mid-range, I’ve been working hard on my mid-range shot.”
With July right around the corner and the Cornsharks Select are set to compete in various live period events. Funderburg should be a name to remember for anyone in need of a good-sized, shooting specialist.
“It’s going to be a good month, I’m excited to play against the elite competition and play in front of coaches and show what we can do,” he said.
