After spending his middle school years in Burlington, Keian Franklin moved to the Washington DC area to live with his mother. Two years later he’s back in Iowa, and ready make a splash with Burlington once again.
“My mom lived out there (Maryland), that was one of the main reasons I moved,” said Franklin. “She moved there when I was in 5th grade, so when I got to high school I kind of wanted to go out there. And DeMatha (High School) is a great school, so I just wanted to go there and try it out — it was mostly for basketball reasons.”
The 6-foot guard spent his 16U offseason playing with Baltimore’s Finest, and he was able to pick up some east coast Division I and Division II interest.
“I’ve seen some interest from a lot of D3s and some D2s. I went to a Catawba (NC) elite camp and talked to their coaches. Also Liberty (D1) has sent me emails and called me. It’s mostly just emails and elite camp invites and that kind of stuff right now,” said Franklin, who is hoping to see his recruitment rise when he’s ready to play with Burlington in January.
“That’s (recruitment) a big part of everything for me right now. I’m reaching out to colleges, and after I get healthy and start playing I think it will really pick up.”
He’s currently sitting out the start of the season after sustaining a stress fracture in his back earlier this fall. He’ll be ready to practice again on Dec. 19.
“For me I feel like coming back I can really score the ball a lot more than I did in Maryland. It’s a whole different level out there,” said Franklin. “And I feel like as a team we can do pretty well, I’ve been watching practice and we have a lot of good pieces.”
The 6-foot junior explained his playing style to PHI.
“I would say my strengths would be shooting, and I like to get my teammates involved, especially when I’m playing the one. Passing is a part of my game that’s underrated,” said Franklin.
“I need to work on my handle and little bit, and finishing at the rim. I just need to work on a little bit of everything, and being consistent.”
Currently he’s without a grassroots program to spend his 17U season with, he mentioned two he could see himself playing for next summer.
“I have been thinking about it, I was thinking either Pump ‘N Run or Barnstormers,” said Franklin. “I played with Pump ‘N Run in 7th-grade, and with the Barnstormers I just feel like I could get exposed a lot.”
