A hidden gem from Dubuque Wahlert, John Timmerman is set to erupt onto the high school this season as a starter on one of the state’s most talented squads.
The up-and-coming 2016 played with the Iowa Mavericks last offseason and though he was able to develop his skill-set, his recruitment still wasn’t able to get going.
He has heard from one area Division III program, and is hoping a big senior season can generate some extra interest.
“I’ve received a little bit (of interest) from St. Ambrose, but I haven’t really looked into it that much. After the season I’ll give it a look and see what it is I want to do,” said Timmerman.
“I just want to let my play do the work this season and hopefully it can earn me some college interest by the end of the year.”
Timmerman was able to identify some possible reasons why he may be flying under the radar up to this point.
“I guess I could say I’ve been under the radar,” said Timmerman. “It could be a number of reasons. For one I play with quite a few other talented kids that garner a lot of attention, and they deserve it. And another reason is I took off AAU for my 16U season, and I know that’s a big summer for recruitment.”
Though he did not play two summers ago, he did spend last summer with the Iowa Mavericks, and was able to hone some necessary skills.
“In the offseason I wanted to work on my game off the dribble, and also working on other factors that go into the game such as rebounding and getting others open,” said the 6-foot-6 — and still growing — wing.
“I’d say my strengths are definitely being a shooter and spacing the floor. And also I have a really good basketball IQ I would say. I’ve been around the game for quite a while and I always see the right lanes to cut to. “And then I’m also pretty good off the ball, and then on defense, and also just getting others open by setting screens, and that sort of thing.”
Timmerman added: “I need to improve my strength, my lateral quickness, and also my vertical. I would also say I want to get better at creating space off the dribble, and creating my own shot for myself.”
With his senior season now underway, it appears Timmerman will be the starting three for the Golden Eagles, 3A’s favorite to win a third straight state title.
“We definitely have a lot of scorers at Wahlert so I won’t necessarily be the go-to scorer, but I know I can still contribute in other ways like playing defense and rebounding on the offensive and defensive end,” said Timmerman. “And I can give the team extra effort, and give the team momentum when we’re down.”
