After averaging 17 points, 3 steals, 3 assists and 4 rebounds per game as junior last season with Nevada, Cole Gidel is poised for a monster senior season.
The 6-foot- guard spent his offseason not only playing on the 17U grassroots circuit, but also attending hoops camps, all while gaining experience and improving his game.
His best experience of the summer was while attending a University of Michigan camp, where he was able to sit down with their head coach John Beilein.
“I haven’t heard a lot for recruitment yet, but I’ve heard from all levels. At the lower level I’d say Luther has talked to me the most. Division I level is where my focus is at right now. I went to a Michigan camp this summer and had a chance to sit down and talk with Coach Beilein. I’ve also gotten some letters from Albany.”
Though Gidel seems focused on playing high-level college hoops at the moment, he says he’s likely consider attending a smaller school.
“I have mixed feelings, some days I think it’s either Division I or else I would just focus on school. Other days I think it doesn’t matter I just want to keep playing basketball,” he said. “And if I had an opportunity to go play somewhere that’s not Division I, chances are I’ll look at that pretty seriously.”
Gidel added: “My biggest thing this winter is I hope it goes well because I would like to play at the next level. But I can’t get too worked up about playing at the next level, I’ve got to keep my head in the right place and focus and work hard everyday.”
With just one winter left to display his game, Gidel says he’d like to flash his ability to get to the rim, while working to improve his outside shot.
“My favorite thing to do is get out in transition, I think an advantage for me is I have a step on guys speed-wise, explosiveness, and quickness. I like to get to the rim and finish, I’m not much of a pull-up jump shooter, I’d rather get to rim and finish there,” said Gidel.
“My 3-point shot percentage is something I’m looking to increase this season, and limiting my turnovers. Last year I had more turnovers than I would have liked to have, so I’m going to focus on keeping that down.”
