I check in at the Bethel Holiday Tournament with the Czar, and we’re immediately greeted with exceptional hospitality. Thanks to the men’s hoops team. Open looks are hard to come by for both teams early, both through good defense and offensive miscues. Tillotson grabbed two fouls and sat the final 11 min (thanks Czar for counting). Riemersma and Hird each with 6 points to lead Jefferson to a 18-16 halftime advantage.
Things seemed to pick up offensively after the break. Jefferson managed a four-point lead that they maintained for several minutes. Then Andover goes on a 13-2 run before John Carlson ends it with a 3. Jefferson gets a couple to drop and we’ve got a 38-38 tie at the six-minute mark. Tied up at 44-44, it’s clear that this half has ran at a much higher scoring pace, and it’s fun to watch. Several baskets trade, Riemersma gets the last put-back and Jefferson gets the 51-49 win.
Player Notes
Jacob Paul, Andover — Gets Andover on the board with a really nice steal and finish where he aggressively shielded his defender from the ball. Added a foul and make for the and-one. Good size on the wing at about 6-3. Junior.
Joe Hird, Jefferson — 6-foot-3 junior guard who is a part of Jefferson’s MN Warriors group in the summer. Showed patience early on working the ball around the arc, then looping around and hitting a 3 in the corner. Strong and not afraid to take contact. Nice vision as a passer, often finding teammates with his peripherals. Loves shooting a floater; led all scorers with 13 points.
Trevor Siebold, Andover — Scrappy, thin senior guard who pushes the pace and has no lack of hustle. Keeps his head on a swivel defensively with active feet; scored a few near the hoop with good awareness. I loved when he missed a lay-up, then scrapped HARD for the rebound and got the second-chance bucket. Had 8 pts.
Tyler Riemersma, Jefferson — Long, 6-foot-7 junior who showed a lot of length right away, deflecting passes and rebounding balls at their highest points. Has a ton of potential with his frame and instincts. Tallied 12 points.
Corbin Johnson, Andover — Bouncy senior who snuck some dunks in during warmups… don’t worry, we won’t tell the refs. Came off the bench for the Huskies as one of their bigger guys. Had several near makes that were just bad luck before makes several during a 13-2 run. Big 3-pointer late to give the Huskies a lead. Ended with 10 points, could have had 20 with better luck.
