- Jarron Cumberland, Wilmington: The 2016 shooting guard and University of Cincinnati signee was the preseason favorite from Southwest Ohio to be Mr. Basketball and his campaign continues to get stronger as we approach the New Year. He had 36 points in a 57-55 win over Covington (Ky.) Catholic. He scored 30 or more in his first three games and scored at least 20 every game this season for the Hurricane (8-0). Cumberland should definitely receive serious consideration for the statewide award in March and could be the third consecutive winner from Southwest Ohio (Luke Kennard won it twice the past two years).
- Darius Bazley, Finneytown: Just a sophomore, Bazley is a 6-7 point guard with excellent potential and some are calling him the best in the state’s 2018 class. He may be a year away from serious Mr. Basketball consideration, but he averages 21.2 points, 13.2 rebounds, 5.3 assists, 3.5 blocks and 1.5 steals.
- Trey Landers, Huber Heights Wayne: The 2016 shooting guard and Dayton signee averages 21.8 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.8 blocks and 1.2 steals for the Warriors (5-0), who may very well be playing for a regional final appearance.
- CJ Fleming, La Salle: The 2017 shooting guard averaged 22.7 points and 3.3 rebounds through the first three games for the Lancers (5-0). The Bellarmine commit has an excellent stroke that could lead the Lancers deep in the tournament though they will likely have to get past another GCL South opponent like Moeller or Elder.
- Carlik Jones, Cincinnati Aiken: The Radford signee averages 21.8 points and 8.6 rebounds at the point guard position for the Falcons. He had 25 points and 11 rebounds against Christ Presbyterian Academy in the Bardstown Holiday Tournament. Aiken could certainly make some noise in the Division III tournament but will have to contend with the likes of Purcell Marian.
Others to watch: Elder 2016 guard Frankie Hofmeyer, Trotwood-Madison 2017 guard Torrey Patton, Versailles 2018 guard Justin Ahrens, Piqua senior forward Colton Bachman, Springboro 2016 guard Drew Holweger
