It’s early, but getting off to a good or bad start can dictate the flow of the season. Here are five teams/players that are trending up and five teams/players that are trending down.
FIVE UP
Mitch Peterson, Walsh Jesuit – Perhaps the most underrate D1 signee in the state, the Kent State commit opened the year with 26 points against Euclid. It’s an early sign of a monster season ahead.
Anfernee Smothers, Lorain – Last year, Lorain’s big man off the bench showed flashes of potential but never truly broke out. Now he starts the season with 26 points and looks like he’s ready to shine.
Garfield Heights – Testing itself with a road game against Bedford in the second game of the season, Garfield Heights passed with flying colors. Not sure if you can go up from No.1, but the Bulldogs are looking good.
Maishe Dailey, Beachwood – The hype is real for Dailey, as he finished with 23 points, including a 6-for-6 start from the field, against Orange. He really can be one the area’s top players.
Cleveland Central Catholic – There was a lot of unknown around the Ironmen, who were only returning one key scorer from last year — Tervell Beck. However, they passed their first test with a win over Warrensville Heights and might have a good young squad.
FIVE DOWN
Bedford – A poor first half at home doomed Bedford against a banged up Garfield Heights squad. Over the last two seasons, the Bearcats have failed to how they can win a big game like that.
Andy Lucien, North Olmsted – In two wins this season, Lucien has a total of 18 points. For a guy capable of 30 points in any game, this would characterize a slow start.
Euclid – There were high hopes around Euclid, but an 0-3 start has tempered the expectations. It’s a loaded schedule, but the Panthers need to get some confidence early.
Berea-Midpark – For the first time since the schools merged, it looks like Berea-Midpark is in a transition year. The loss to Lakewood on Tuesday was a rare home defeat for the Titans.
Scoring – Outside of a massive output by Lorain, there really hasn’t been much scoring early. Take this as teams trying to figure out the flow of their offense early on.
