Continue ReadingTonight is another significant night of hoops around the Cincinnati area. Let’s take a closer look at some of the top games to watch. All tipoff times are 7:30 p.m. tonight:
La Salle (0-0) at Northwest (2-1) – This is the season opener for the Lancers after their football team won the second straight Division II state title in Columbus on Friday. La Salle won’t be at full strength, but coach Dan Fleming understands that. Watch for junior sharp-shooting guard CJ Fleming (Dan’s son) in this game. CJ Fleming is verbally committed to Bellarmine. Northwest defeated Ross 65-43 last week. Senior guard Kobe Brown had 20 points, six rebounds and two assists in that game. Senior guard Jay Harris had 18 points.
Purcell Marian (4-0) at Carroll (4-0) – The premier matchup of the night occurs in the Greater Catholic League Co-Ed division with this game in Dayton. Purcell Marian averages a conference-best 72.3 points. Carroll must be able to play well defensively against the backcourt duo of seniors Jordan Gaines and Rashaad Ali-Shakir, who had seven 3-pointers against Alter. Senior post Kameron Moore is a force to be reckoned with on the block and can be very explosive near the rim. Carroll is led by senior 6-3 forward D.J. Somers, who averages 12.8 points, 3.5 rebounds and a steal. Keep an eye on 6-6 senior center Jared Kieninger, who averages 6.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.3 steals.
Oak Hills (2-1) at Fairfield (1-1) – An intriguing Greater Miami Conference matchup in northern Cincinnati. Oak Hills has four players in double-digit scoring average including sophomore guard Nick Deifel, who averages 14.3 points. Junior 6-5 guard Ryan Batte averages 12.7 points and 6.7 rebounds and is shooting 50 percent from the 3-point line. Watch for 6-4 junior guard Luke Rudy (11.0 ppg.) and senior 6-2 guard Michael Lake (10.7 ppg.). Fairfield also has four players in double-digit scoring average including senior 6-4 forward Mitchell Woods, who averages 19 points and seven rebounds. Senior guard Cedric Woods (12 ppg.), senior 6-4 guard TC Wells (11.0 ppg. and 9.0 rpg.) and junior 6-6 forward Ben Phillips (11.0 ppg. and 6.5 rpg.) are also players to watch.
Sycamore (2-2) at Mason (2-1) – Mason has won two straight games since a last-second loss to Dublin Jerome in the opener. Mason junior guard Eddie Puisis averages 11.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.0 blocks, 1.3 steals and 1.3 assists. Senior guard Kyle Lamotte averages 11 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.3 assists. Sycamore has been led by junior center Jaden Sayles, who averages 16.3 points, five rebounds and 1.5 blocks.
Wilmington (3-0) at Miami Trace (1-1) – What will Jarron Cumberland do in his fourth game this season? The Wilmington senior shooting guard and University of Cincinnati signee has scored 101 points in his first three games this season. This could be another memorable night.
Others to watch: Winton Woods at St. Xavier; Hamilton at Princeton; Badin at Chaminade Julienne; Seven Hills at CHCA; Clark Montessori at Summit Country Day
