Heading into the 2015 Class AA Boys Basketball State Championship, Melrose needed someone to lead. They were facing a great club in Caledonia, and the community was fired up about the chances of winning state for the first time in 41 years.
Junior Drake Meyer stepped in, scoring 24 points and grabbing 8 rebounds in the biggest game of his life. The Dutchmen won handily, 63-51, and the title came back to Melrose.
“There’s a great basketball culture in Melrose,” the now-senior Meyer said. “Melrose has always been known for a good basketball team. We have four players who were a big part of the state title team returning, and then we have a few younger guys who are looking really good. ”
Drake played football this fall, but Melrose lost right away in sections, totalling a 5-4 record. He estimates that they were favorites to go to the section finals. With the fall season over, Meyer is working on his hoops game. “Last year, my game was mostly about shooting the 3 and penetrating,” he said. “This year, I have been working on my pull up jumper a lot.”
And as a senior, he’s also trying to set up visits on college campuses.
“I have several coaches/colleges who are contacting me,” he said. “Mostly all UMAC schools like Crown, Bethany Lutheran, Northland, but Mayville State has also showed some interest. I don't have any official visits right now, but the coaches and I are trying to set some up.”
