Though Trigg County point guard Demaria Nance has never played grassroots ball, he’s still been able to use his regular seasons with the Wildcats to generate some initial interest.
Two schools from the National Christian College Athletic Association have shown interest in the 5-foot-7 senior, and another Kentucky NAIA has inquired about him also.
“I have three schools interested, one is Morthland out of Illinois, another is Campbellsville, and the third is Boyce College in Louisville. They’ve been emailing my coach and he tells me they’re interested,” said Nance, who says he’s hoping a winning season with the Wildcats can help spark some interest in him.
“I’m not really thinking about it (recruitment) too much, but I hope that coaches find me during the season. I’m more worried about wins right now, because we get wins they’ll finally hear about you.”
Instead of playing grassroots ball this spring and summer the talented point guard was in the gym working on his own, and played in a couple team camps with Trigg County.
“I was in the gym a lot doing individual workouts and stuff like that with my coach,” said Nance. “And I played in a couple of tournaments with my high school team. This summer I improved with my pull-up jumper off the dribble, and coming off screens and exploding to the basket.”
Nance went on the explain his playing style to PHK.
“I really like coming off screens and letting my big-man role and just lobbing it up to them,” he said. “A weakness right now is my left hand, it’s not as good as my right.
He’s been starting with the Wildcats’ varsity since his sophomore season, and says his leadership will have to increase this season.
“I’m the leader this year, last year I started leading the team toward the end of the season. My coach has been pushing me some to be more of a leader and to talking and getting everyone where they need to be, and getting everyone involved — so that’s my role this year,” said Nance, who is approaching a special scoring milestone.
“Some personal goals are to get to the 1,000 point club. And then I let a lot of players score on me last year, so I’ll have to play better defense.”
