2016
Konrad Bueckers (Pine River-Backus). There is under the radar and off the radar, and Konrad’s status may not fit either. He’s a 6-foot-6, home-schooled senior from outstate Minnesota that was in a stance and competing the entire day. By stance I mean he was fully bent at the legs with a straight back constantly shuffling his feet. Loved his effort around the glass, defensively, everything.
Booker Coplin (Shakopee). Coplin played mad at times and we loved it. Had some of that JP Macura scowl on his face knocking out treys and being physical with just about everybody that he faced. Seemed very determined to produce and make an impact and guess what, he did.
Michael Cornelius (Highland Park). He forced people to take notice always running the floor, always battling on the glass for boards, always giving an extra effort. Michael stands about 6-foot-2 and he would use all of that to attack bigger players and score after contact. Played inspired.
Elijah Hannah (Mpls Roosevelt). This event had a lot of younger guards and they all kept trying to guard Elijah when he was lead guard and they all couldn’t deal with his size at the position. He used his strength to force his way around the corner, as well as to finish, and he used his skill to move defenders so he could attack and play make.
Zachary Knollenberg (Spectrum). Knollenberg did everything you would expect him to but I want to take this time to note that this is a kid that has over a 4.0 grade point average on a four point scale and a 35 on his ACT. A 35.
Gavin Schroeder (Caledonia). Moves well laterally, runs straight line like a long track athlete, very long, active four man. Stands about 6-foot-5 and moves well plus his length makes up for some of the height against taller players. Getting better every time I see him.
Eric Tiedman (Jordan). Jordan opponents are going to have a tough time dealing with Tiedman and Jimmy V up front. Tiedman is a 6-foot-5 no nonsense guy that was always in front of the rim to bring down caroms. Guy will do a lot of the dirty work.
Isaiah Wannarka (Triton). Scored in smooth ways on Sunday, loved the attacking floaters, basket attack glass kisses, and contested extensions to finish around the basket. A smooth athlete with a lot of potential as a scorer. Impressed yesterday.
2017
Jack Korte (Henry Sibley). I thought Korte did some nice things producing buckets. Good touch, aggressive approach, quick to release, good demeanor, young man has a chance to be a nice shooter helping the Warriors back from a dreadful previous winter.
Jordan Lynn (Mpls Patrick Henry). When I looked down to see his school and saw Henry I thought “another Henry kid?” Yes another Henry kid that showed up to a weekend event and caught attention with his slashing ability.
Lamar Wood (Mpls Patrick Henry). Easily the most noticeable guy amongst those in the gym yesterday because at his size of 6-foot-7 Lamar runs ahead of the pack, is quick off his feet, makes plays above the rim, and swatted a lot of attempts. Can’t wait to see what he looks like in high school game action.
Hunter McCalla (Becker). Looked him up at the Heat combine after noticing him make some plays, did the same thing yesterday. A 6-foot-4 Becker wing should have a role this year based on what we’ve seen him to catching and shooting as well as making a play off of one dribble. Was more of a JV guy as a sophomore, now as a junior it seems he could play his way into a role.
Nolan Whalen (Tartan). Whalen moved over to Minnesota this past spring and he’s going to make the Titans deeper. Whalen is a bouncy, agile 6-foot-2 guard that has a lot of potential because of his activity, skill, and agility. He should fit in for the Titans on both ends of the floor.
2018
Byron Bynum (Blaine). The Bengals are in a good spot PG wise for the next three years. Byron is a tough PG that plays with toughness and leads his team in a no-nonsense way. The Bengals stumbled onto something here, this young man is tough and seems matured for his age.
Mike Coble (Byron). The potential this athletic 6-foot-2 guard was maybe the number one thing that caught my eye in the time I was at Lakeville South. He is a big guard that handles well, really impressed with his vision recording numerous assists off the bounce to a variety of opponents, and his pull-up jumper was solid as well. Definitely a scholarship potential guy that we will watch close.
Trakon Massey (Cooper). Good sized guard who has grown some and we remain very high on what he is capable of. Talented finisher with uses a strong first step combined with a nice separation game to score. Good potential as a combo guard, looks longer and stronger.
Mitchell Weber (St. Clair). This is a guy to add to the prospect lists of 2018. If he plays Grassroots ball he will be on a top five team because at 6-foot-6 and growing Weber competes hard around the basket and moves well. A combine like this is there to improve players and help get them noticed. Weber did both. Watch for his name sooner rather than later.
