Recruiting Report: Tommy Lucca (2016)

Genoa Kingston 6’0” point guard Tommy Lucca is the #16 prospect and #4 point guard in the state’s class of 2016. He sure isn’t getting recruited like it though! That might be partially because he was out for July with an injury, but this kid gets it. He has proven it on the high school level and on the circuit with the Illinois Wolves.

Lucca plays the game the right way. Everything he does is crisp and with a purpose. He has a great feel for the game with his vision and distribution skills. On the travel team circuit with the Wolves he shows his pass first point guard abilities while on his high school team he does it all putting up monster scoring numbers as well as dishing the rock. Lucca can shoot it from mid-range and three with a good looking shot. We caught up with the senior floor general to discuss how the spring went with the Illinois Wolves on the Under Armour circuit.

“We played pretty well during the spring and competed with the best talent in the country. Our schedule was tough and we knew we belonged there. I felt that I really began to show what I can bring to the table for a team. My confidence level was at an all-time high and felt that I could really produce for my teammates.”

Late in June Lucca suffered an injury that sidelined him for July. He chatted with us about what happened and where he is in the recovery process.

“In our last game of the summer I came down and a kid landed on my ankle sending my knee out. I sprained my MCL and it kept me out of July. I was out for about six weeks and now I’m in full recovery and have complete mobility with it. I feel better than I had before.”

Genoa Kingston will open up on the big stage at the prestigious Tournament of Champions in Washington, Illinois for Thanksgiving. Lucca can’t wait!

“Not much can describe it. Since I’ve been back its all I’ve been working for. To show that I am able to produce on the national level. My senior season is going to be the biggest yet.”

Lucca updated us on his recruitment.

“I have the offer from Michigan Tech and am planning on my official up there for the weekend of October 31st. Quincy and Ferris State are on me as well. I also just set a visit to Ferris State just now for October 23-25.”

His lone offer comes from Michigan Tech. What does he like about them?

“Coach Luke and Coach Buettner came down for an in-home a few weeks back and showed how important family is. They are a winning program that develops their players the right way. They know how to make you feel wanted.”

The senior knows what he will be looking for in a program.

“I’m looking for that winning culture around the program. A program that is a family. And developed their players for the next level.”

He broke down what his timetable is for a college decision.

“I believe I’m going to wait for the late signing period and play some high school basketball and weigh my options from there with my family.”

What will the program that lands him be getting?

“They are getting a winner. Someone who is going to continue to get better and better as time goes on and has the drive to be the best. With the exception of Charlie (Moore) I feel I’m the best guard in the state and I can’t wait to prove it this season.”

Low-major D1 programs in need of a point guard need to take a close look at this point guard during his high school season. He could very well be one of those kids that ends up at a D2 and makes the D1 programs that didn’t recruit him regret it for four years. The Tournament of Champions in Washington over Thanksgiving week will be a great opportunity for schools to see him play against quality competition!
