Recruiting Report: Ted Brown (2016)

<h2>October 6, 2015</h2>One of 2016s most sought-after bigs, Ted Brown has racked up eight offers - seven Division II and one Division I - and says he’s close to making his selection. His offers; Winona State, Minnesota State-Moorhead, Sioux Falls, Minot State, Rockhurst, Missouri Southern, and Western Illinois. Last weekend he took official visits to Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State-Moorehead, and this weekend he’ll take officials to Sioux Falls - he’ll be at Winona State the following weekend. The 6-foot-10 center says there are a couple of schools recruiting him that have not yet offered. “Lindenwood called me some, and then Loyola-Maryland called me and texted me two or three times a couple weeks ago,” said Brown, who says his dream was always to play D1, but he’s content with playing D2 ball. “D1 was always the goal when I was growing up, but when I got these D2 offers I kind of took a step back and realized I had a lot of potential to win a national championship with these D2 teams. And with Western Illinois (D1) the potential is not that high. I’m just going to choose the college that I feel the best fit with the coaches and the best campus, stuff like that.” “I’m probably going to commit after all these visits, maybe a week or so afterwards, after I compare them all together. I’ll probably be doing the early signing period.” This summer Brown joined the Barnstormers after spending previous summers with All Iowa Attack. “I’d say I rebounded pretty well this offseason and I wasn’t really called upon to score too much, but when I was called upon to score in certain games I think I did a good job at stepping up,” said Brown. “I would say I probably improved the most getting better position in the post and quicker moves, also getting more repetition and confidence.” As the anchor in the post on a Dowling team that could compete for a state title in 4A, Brown says it will be his responsibility to fill the void left by last year’s seniors. “We had seniors last year that we called upon when the game was on the line and we needed a big bucket. I think that will kind of be my role this year, long with a few other senior leaders we have,” said Brown. “The only main goal I have is just to win a state championship, no individual goals. If we win a state championship, that’s all I want.” <h2>April 30, 2015</h2>Note: Since this article was published Brown received an offer from Division II Winona State The tallest, and biggest prospect in a class with a slew of great bigs, 6-foot-10, 248 pound center Ted Brown is generating interest from far and wide because of it. The Dowling product is playing his first season with Iowa Barnstormers after competing last summer with All Iowa Attack Nike, and is hearing from schools as far as Baton Rouge and as wide as San Diego, in addition to the usual midwest programs. “South Dakota State and Western Illinois called me and told me they were going to come and watch me this summer, and Nebraska-Omaha came and watched me this year,” said Brown “And I’ve had email with San Diego University and Loyola-Marymount (CA), and I get a bunch a mail from LSU, just some letters that I feel like they send out to a lot of kids.” Brown averaged 12.4 points and 6.8 rebounds per game for a 15-8 Dowling Catholic squad during his junior season, and says creating space in the paint was something he excelled at. “I just feel like I got pretty good position this year and my teammates got the ball inside well this year,” said Brown who also mentioned rebounding, defense and put-backs were a point of emphasis this season. As he continues to work with his massive frame and develop his skill-set this offseason, Brown says his freebies and extending his range are his priorities this offseason. “I always want to work on my free throws and get those a little better than last year, and also just get more confident with everything and work on my left hand and hook-shots without a dribble, just go straight up,” said Brown. “I kind of want to develop my outside game a little bit too, not so much 3-point, but mid-range, and be able to attack off the dribble a little more and stuff like that.” <h2>April 9, 2014</h2>By trushing Dowling Catholic's starting center Ted Brown is a PHI top-prospect from 2016. The 6-foot-8 big man has a body in the high school mold of Nicola Pekovic of the Minnesota Timberwolves. But even at elite football school Dowling Catholic, Brown remains loyal to his love of basketball. "They want me to play football,"Brown told PHI, "but I hate football." Brown averaged 7.3 points on 62 percent shooting and 5.6 rebounds for the Maroons this season. A team he said was surprisingly resilient. "We played pretty good as a team, one thing we did that no other team that I've ever been on has done is we bounced back nicely from really tough losses," said Brown. We caught up with the big man at last weekend's Midwest Festival of Teams in Ames, where he told PHI the wheels are in motion for his recruitment process. "At the Drake camp, their coaches came up and talked with me," said Brown. "And I've gotten a few letters from some other schools, like Nebraska-Omaha, a lot of coaches come up and talk with (All Iowa Attack coach) Lefty (Moore) after games too." Brown will play for AIA this off-season and says rebounding, physicality and his effort are his strengths. His weaknesses? "I'm going to work on my free-throws, left hand and dribbling," said Brown.
