The Gopher basketball staff recently watched Race play football and then invited him to campus for an unofficial basketball visit which included front row seats to the football game against Kent State.
Of course Race is the son of Gopher football legend Darrell Thompson who rushed for 4,654 yards and 40 touchdowns before playing five seasons in the NFL for the Green Bay Packers.
Race plays a few positions for the Armstrong Falcons football team as a sophomore and he was the starting center on the basketball team as a freshman averaging six plus points per game.
Thompson’s game really took off this spring and summer where Race played multiple positions for D1 Minnesota showing off a high skill level on the perimeter as well as physical abilities that also allow him to compete with the best around the rim.
Rivals.com national analyst Eric Bossi saw Thompson play this summer and stated “Thompson is a solidly built forward with good fundamentals and willingness to play physically.”
NHR was also impressed with Thompson watching him compete in Las Vegas at the end of July.
“The way Race moves he right now looks like a long, agile, and athletic four. Totally grabbed our attention with a transition push feeling so comfortable handling and then his three at the top of the key rimmed out but the stroke is so nice. Often had to bring the ball up the floor and did it comfortably.
“Race’s development makes me wonder what his position will be in the future. There is the possibility with more skill development he could play a lot of small forward.”
Thompson is considered the second best prospect in Minnesota’s 2018 class at the moment and he’s visited Minnesota and Wisconsin recently as a guest. His trip to see the Gopher practice and facilities was in mid-September.
“It was a lot of fun, the coaches really made me feel welcome and the players did as well,” said Thompson. “(I’ve been) on two unofficial visits.”
We expect Thompson to have a strong season with the Falcons this fall and winter where Race is also playing with his brother True Thompson, a senior at Armstrong who is a serious up and comer on the court and gridiron (leads Armstrong in receiving).
