Football teams are dropping off like flies as they lose section games this time of year. Luckily for Jack Kortes, he and the Prior Lake Lakers are still clicking. They will face East Ridge on Friday.
“I play free safety and we’re doing well,” Kortes said. “Our three losses were really tough, they were to Maple Grove, Eden Prairie and Wayzata.”
As he hopes to play hoops in college, Kortes is still finding time during football playoffs to attend open gyms, communicate with schools and attend events like the NHR Combine.
“I visited UW-La Crosse a couple weeks ago, and I liked it a lot,” he said. “I've been talking to them, Augsburg, St. Olaf and Briar Cliff a lot. Our team has been having practices twice a week.”
I spoke to Kortes at the combine briefly, and he’s always polite. It’s no wonder that his conversations with coaches go really well. He also tries to look at his college choice from a wider perspective, asking himself if it’s a place he would attend without basketball.
“The coaches always talk a lot to me about football and how that's going, getting me to come down for a visit and just telling me about their athletics and academics,” Kortes said. “I want a place that I could see myself going to even if I wasn't playing basketball. Not too big or too small, and fairly close to home.”
Kortes averaged 6.4 PPG for Prior Lake last year and is the top returning scorer. The Lakers’ top four scorers from last year’s 13-14 campaign all graduated, but according to Kortes, reinforcements are on the way.
“I think we'll have a good squad,” he said. “I think Devin Mays and Brian Sitzman will have big years, with Casey Gustina bringing the ball up and Nick Raddatz as a strong defensive player.”
Update from 7/3/15 by Alex Conover
Jack Kortes has had a rough grassroots season thus far.
He tore a ligament in his ankle (grade two ankle sprain) to begin the year, but luckily it did not require surgery. He rehabbed it and strengthened his ankle back up, and he’s now ready to get back out with Select Altenhofen.
“I've played a bunch of summer league games with Prior Lake and at a tourney in Augustana,” Kortes said. “It feels good. I'm very excited to get back playing with Select.”
As a 6-4 wing player, Kortes generated a good amount of interest during the school season as a junior. Those schools and more are still in touch.
“I’ve heard from Carleton, St. Olaf, Hamline, Augsburg, Concordia the most,” Kortes said,” and then I’ve heard a little from St. Scholastica, Concordia-St. Paul and Upper Iowa.”
Select Altenhofen will play in July 8th’s Minnesota Heat Jamboree at Colin Powell Center.
