We checked in with Grant Rohrer last week, a 6-6 power forward from Murray County Central who played his grassroots ball with Southwest Stars. He’s going through what many kids are trying to decide, and that’s looking at their own frame and trying to estimate what position they might move to.
“Well I've played post all of my high school career,” Rohrer said, “but in college, I am probably going to have to transition into an outside player because I am not quite tall enough to play post in college, I'm guessing. I’m working on perimeter shooting and ball-handling. I'm 6'6 with shoes on, but people think I will grow more because of the size of my feet.”
Other things Grant is working on include his mid-range jumper and his attack to the rim off the dribble. We’re not so sure he HAS to switch positions, especially with seeing so many D3 post players in the past do well at the 6-4 to 6-6 height range. But if he could truly transition to a wing, he’d carry great size and could be an attractive prospect at the scholarship level.
“I have visited Dordt, Northwestern (IA), Sioux Falls, and Gustavus. Coaches calling are Dordt, Northwestern, Gustavus, St. John's, Buena Vista, Mount Marty, Bethel,” Rohrer listed. I currently have an NAIA offer from Northwestern, and I have had over 25 letters of interest and or calls/texts.”
Grant just finished his football season, and MCC struggled a bit as it went 2-7 on the year and lost in the first round of sections to Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s. He played wide receiver and outside linebacker, but is likely focusing on basketball in college.
