I was at the Washburn/Roosevelt football game a few weeks back and realized that senior hooper Elijah Hannah was playing quarterback for them. After watching a few quarters, I realized the kid could toss the ball.
His team didn’t do very well this season, but that didn’t stop some college football coaches from coming to see him.
“Winona State had me come visit,” Hannah told NHR. “Truman State came to a few games and have been talking to me some along with some other D3s… but football isn’t really an option. I don’t like it enough to put the work in that football requires.”
With that settled, we focused the talk towards basketball recruiting; Hannah generated buzz all summer with Select-Ohnstad.
“I’ve visited St. Thomas twice and will be taking an overnight visit tomorrow. St. Scholastica has been talking to me about coming to visit as well as Augsburg. St. Olaf texted me today about coming to visit also.”
With a good GPA, Hannah has a lot of options. He’ll join fellow seniors Martez Rodgers (check out his recent NHR story) and Taray Graves along with newcomer Xavier Pollard to create a nice Teddies core.
“I think the city conference will be 1. North and then 2. Roosevelt,” Hannah said. “I’m not sure about the rest. I know a lot of the conference is in a rebuilding stage.”
Hannah plans to make a college decision either during or shortly after his senior season.

Want to improve immensely at basketball? Train with Mitch Ohnstad. Elijah Hannah of Roosevelt is playing with his Select team this summer, and he’s seeing tangible improvements.
‘Mitch has been working with everyone on the team with their ball handling,” Elijah said. “He has many drills that we can take and do on our own. He has helped me tweak some small things with my jumper as well.
“Also, every Wednesday we have the strength coach from the Gophers work us out before our practice. He gives us many ways to get stronger without needing a weight room, so I can do it at home. And I feel like I’m getting stronger.”
Northstar Hoops noticed Elijah using his physicality in several tournaments this spring.
“I'm a competitive person, and sometimes being more physical than my opponent gives me some advantages,” Hannah said. “Any way I can get an advantage, I try to capitalize on it. Mitch brings me in games off the bench to switch up the tempo and bring some enthusiasm on the defensive end. So often being physical allows me to do that.”
Strong play with Select and MN Roosevelt during a nice playoff run this year has garnered Hannah some solid recruiting interest for the next level.
“Yesterday Hamline called, and last week Minot State called also,” Hannah said. “I have gotten some Letters from Northland, Jamestown University, Minot State, Northern State University, St. Thomas University, Macalester University and South Dakota State. I have visited Augsburg, but that’s the only school I have visited. Hamline asked me if i would like to take a visit, so that might come soon. I’m also going to the Minot State High Performance camp.”
