NHR connected with St. Croix Lutheran/Select senior shooter Aage Rovney after his recent trip to Minot State for his first NSIC visit.
“The Minot visit was a great time,” Rovney said. “I had a lot of fun taking my first official visit. But I'm still going to keep my recruitment open. My top two right now are St. John's and Minot, but I'm not making any decisions until after Christmas.”
Rovney is laid back about the process, letting schools come to him rather than reaching out himself. He’s enjoying fall league with his teammates, and feels like SCL is going to be a major Class AA state contender this year. If they can maximize their potential and build on last year’s state run, we agree.
“To me, if we stay healthy, we are tough to beat in any class,” Rovney said. “For us seniors its title or bust. I'm moving to the one this year, where I played my sophomore year. But my role is to get out and push the tempo and score. Between Ade Lamu, Trent Krueger and myself, we return the majority of our scoring and plan on scoring more around 19 each.”
Rovney also mentioned fellow senior Venkat Valluri as a starter and noted that there is one spot yet to be filled.
“We also have great depth this year,” he added. “We have an open spot at the four right now and we have three other guards who could see time. A couple sophomores and juniors that will be really tough.”
Rovney will be attending a practice at St. John’s in the near future. The Crusaders kick their season off on Nov. 24 against New Life.
Update from 7/9/15 by Alex Conover
Aage Rovney of St. Croix Lutheran loves AAU, don’t get him wrong, but he thinks that the work he’s done this summer outside of tournament play has helped him the most.
“I weight lift three mornings a week at my school,” Aage said. “And I've been training with Mitch Ohnstad for about three years now. He's helped me with evening my game out. I used to just be all 3s, and now I can score at all three levels.”
Rovney’s college interest spans a wide spectrum. After all, everyone could use a shooter.
“I went out to the SDSU elite camp,” Rovney said. “I was going to go to Upper Iowa’s but I decided to play in St. Cloud. The most active school is Minot State. I've been contacted by UM-Duluth, Upper Iowa and Minot from the NSIC along with a couple of NAIAs and a majority of the MIAC.”
Rovney’s not as concerned about which division he plays in as much as he wants a good fit and a good relationship with his coach. “I would prefer to go to a level that provides scholarships… whether NAIA/D2/D1 it doesn't fully matter the level,” he said. “And if I feel like D3 is the best option, I'll take it. Augsburg, Bethel, St. Olaf, Hamline all have been in contact.”
The senior-to-be won’t take any visits until July is over, just to see what comes his way. He’s looking at education or construction business as possible paths of study.
