A defensive-first point guard, Ernest Jenkins has seen his recruitment ramp-up of late with mixed Division I and Division II interest.
He currently holds no offers, but was able to identify two schools after him the most, and has taken one unofficial visit to date.
“No offers right now, I’ve had a lot of high interest from William & Mary, Radford, Shepherd, a lot of mid-major schools, including UNC-Greensboro and Mount St. Mary’s. I would say Shepherd and William & Mary are after me the most,” said Jenkins.
“I’ve also taken an unofficial visit to Bowie State, that went pretty well. I got up and down with the guys, played a lot of pickup, they ask me to come play with them a lot.”
Unique about the talented 2016 prospect is his defensive approach to the game, he embraces being a lock-down defender. And said he was the energy guy last season as a junior at Bishop McNamara.
“I always guarded the best player and just try to make them uncomfortable. I felt like I brought a lot of energy to the team, especially to the starting five, just getting up and down the floor, getting steals and starting fast-breaks, stuff like that,” he said.
“I focus a lot on defense, especially when it’s a top-notch player that I’m playing against, I’m always up for the challenge to guard the best player. I’m always willing to sacrifice my offense to guard the best player.”
Though he spends most of his time now as a combo guard, he says sees himself primarily as a point guard at the next level.
“Definitely point guard in college, I like to run the show and get my teammates the ball, and I’d like to be a defensive anchor on the other end, and then knock down shots when I’m open,” said Jenkins, who after starting the offseason with DC Bluedevils has been playing with Bump ‘N Run over the past month.
“We got a big month of July coming up. I just have to show my talent and hopefully help us get a couple wins, and get some of our guys more exposure.”
