Indiana Elite has made the Finals and Runner-Up games the last two years and showcased the state in a great light. Last year it was Ryan Cline that led Indiana Elite to a championship with Kyle Guy on the team. This season it was Kyle’s turn.
It wasn’t the outcome they wanted but finishing in 4th place with all of the talent in the Adidas Uprising circuit, that would have to be categorized as a solid season. Indiana Elite lost to Team Loaded with touted seniors Dennis Smith and Edrice Adebayo.
Kyle Guy finished with 19 points and 7 boards. Ohio native Matthew Moyer chipped in 20 and 11 with sharpshooter Grant Gelon hitting a few three-pointers for 9 points. Guy showed what has made him a special player over the last couple years. He’s so crafty with the ball in his hand and can score it in so many ways. Strength will always be a concern for him and until he gets it, college will be a tough adjustment. Once he adds it, he’s got a chance.
The combination of Justin Thomas and Nai Carlisle have to be given a ton of credit. Look at the stats through this week at Adidas and just see how efficient they have been. Offense wasn’t that big but they did their job of running the team and creating for others. Their assist-to-turnover ratios are both great and it is something that can go unnoticed.
Don’t get it twisted, Grant Gelon isn’t Ryan Cline. However, from the waist up he does remind you a lot about him. He’s a great shooter that is going to be deadly in college. Defense is a must at the next level and he’s a little lost right now. Guidance from coaches could go a long way. As a guy that does one thing really, really well, that is extremely coveted.
With a down class in the state for 2016, the award for the best team in the state almost has to go to Indiana Elite. They’ve competed well in every event this year and did well on the national stage. And guess what, they might be pretty good again next season. Indiana Elite 2017, they won the 16U Adidas Summer Championship today.
