Suggs has been mentioned a few times in articles since his showing at The Expo and for good reason. Lackey looks to defend their Class 2A crown despite being without Malik Gordon, who graduated and will suit up for St. Mary’s College of Maryland as a freshman this winter. Suggs is the obvious guy to be next in line in taking over not only the on-ball duties as an initiator, but an overall playmaker and the guy who they’ll count on in crunch time to lead them to wins. There’s no doubt that Suggs has no issue getting into the paint, but two things to watch as he expands his offensive game will be knocking down shots from outside and learning how to make those around him better. That will be the ultimate test to how good this Lackey team will be. Nevertheless, his production and improvement shown since the late summer is worthy of a bump in the next update.

Suggs steps into the main role for a Lackey squad who will look to protect last year’s Class 2A state title. He’ll have big shoes to fill after Malik Gordon (St. Mary’s College of Maryland) has graduated and advanced to the level. All signs from Suggs this summer and fall indicate readiness to take on the leadership role both with his play and from a vocal standpoint. He brings impactful positional size at 6-foot-4 with burst, wiggle and ability to break down most defenders in space. A standout from this year’s Expo, Suggs is a handful in transition, a plus rebounder at the guard slot and will be a valuable defender who, with his size, could realistically guard four different positions.

Another player we had high hopes for coming into the event was Suggs and it didn’t take long for him to prove as a dynamic, downhill threat from the point of attack. He brings a nice combination of size, length and twitch off the catch or as he sizes his defender up with jabs or crossovers. He found driving lanes with regularity and even when his defender was able to recover and contest his layup attempts, Suggs would use his long wingspan to create an angle to get it off cleanly. His jumper was flowing in the mid-range when he couldn’t maneuver his way to the cup and his end-to-end speed was evident on grab-and-go’s as he was one of the better rebounding guards in attendance.

Great chance for Suggs to boost his stock even further heading into his senior season where he’ll be a primary focus for the reigning Class 2A champions. A guard with good positional size, he’ll be able to showcase how prepared he is for the increased role this Sunday at The Expo. The style of play that oftentimes settles in, which will be an uptempo, transition-heavy pace should benefit Suggs with his ability to get to the rim in a variety of ways. He’s best with a full head of steam and can use his share of spins and crossovers combined with his lengthy strides to gain driving lanes where and get to the cup. He’s shown to score it with either hand in unorthodox ways, but one thing we’ll look for is how he takes advantage of showing off his athleticism above the rim as well as the balance when having to settle for jumpers.

-Easily the most balanced overall prospect in the field from this weekend, I loved Suggs’ all-around impact on the game as a rangy wing prospect. Suggs proved adept at getting to the rim and finishing with unorthodox moves around the basket by playing off of two feet around the rim. I liked his defensive instincts to cut off his opponent’s airspace when they picked up their dribble and his ability to fight over ball screens to stay in front of his matchup–when engaged. Suggs also proved capable of knocked down touch shots in the paint and short jumpers within ten feet of the rim off of step-backs/side-steps/up-n-under ball fakes. Love how balanced his game is at both ends of the floor and the 2-way impact that he is able as a defender capable of guarding 1-3 at the HS level.

Travis was electric in their big rivalry win at the HoopBuzz on Saturday. He was attacking the basket with an intensity that willed him through the defenders time and time again. Travis was a problem to match up with all night, with his speed and strength combined, it was tough to contain him from getting two feet in the paint. He showed consistency knocking down shots from long range as well, making it tough to leave him too much space. Provided the energy all game and his team needed his juice to overpower a stout opponent. A performance to remember from Travis Suggs in a big game for Lackey’s season.
