The 6-4 junior guard played with a ton of craftiness without the basketball in his hands to make an impact. Verna finished with a game-high 34 points on 13-of-21 shooting from the field, including five made 3-pointers in the win over Riviera Prep. On the defensive side, Verna played with a ton of scrappiness at jumping the passing lanes causing a lot of havoc for the offense. He also collected five rebounds, with four of them on the defensive end.

Owen took over the game in the 1st half for stretches against Eastside Catholic today in Mater Dei’s first round win. He was all over the court rebounding, moving without the ball effectively, and causing turnovers with steals and deflections. Verna plays very unselfishly and all of Mater Dei’s shooters coupled with their constant movement provide a ripe environment for him to rack up assists and find teammates for easy shots.

is a strong ball handler who is a good playmaker, 3-point shooter, and 1-on-1 defender. Verna’s strong build allows him to finish effectively through contact in the paint, and play physical defense. Owen is mainly a catch and shoot threat, but his mere presence allows other teammates to have wider driving lanes and less defensive attention.

Verna is a tremendously malleable player who plays with a team first approach, and he should only continue to improve this coming season at Mater Dei playing heavy minutes once again.

Dude didn’t miss. Verna nearly broke the school record for threes in the Quarterfinals, then knocked down several more in the consolation game. Shot it well in catch and shoot and showed the ability to shoot it coming off screens.
