Wrote in-depth about Costley’s performance that got him the nod for First Team, but just quick analysis as he was the bell cow for Team 1. His 6-foot-2 strong frame, improved athleticism and overall toughness made him the guy to defend the other team’s most potent threat. No matter what position they were, Costley used his body and active hands to make life difficult from the point of attack defensively. On offense, he consistently beat guys off the dribble, finished through contact and made quick reads from the center of the paint to reward cutters or bigs along the baseline.

Costley is primed for a productive season as McDonogh’s floor general, but what makes him effective is his ability to adjust to what the game needs in order for his team to win. Today was another example of that adaptability as he played more as an off-ball guard and took on more of scoring role. Costley was effective in space, especially when he drew switches on ball screens where he could string the switching forward/big out into the open floor for iso’s and use his first step to blow by for points in the paint. There were occasions where he had to pull the trigger from 15-to-17 feet off the dribble or shoot off movement after timely lifts. In both instances, he had nice balance and body control to go with his high release.

Costley’s IQ, ability to expose mismatches and defensive versatility were all key components in his team’s victories in 3v3/5v5.

Costley has had a busy summer playing for Team Takeover National and MD Legends on a share of the Prep Hoops Circuit events and MHC. In either case, the 6-foot-2 lead guard has proven himself as a true floor general heading into his junior season and has built some momentum with Patriot and Ivy League programs as a prospect firmly on their radar.

On Sunday it’ll be another opportunity for Costley to showcase his balanced approach as a scorer and table-setter. He left an impression during the June Scholastic Live Period with McDonogh and will be handed the keys to orchestrate the offense in the half court for the Eagles this season with a nice body of work to back it.

I’m a believer that a big season is in store for Costley. It may not be in the fashion of posting videogame like numbers, but in the sense of showing his control and game management from the point guard position. He enters this season as the undoubted starting point guard for head coach Gerry Abrams and there should be confidence putting the ball in his hands based off the spring and summer that he strung together. In DMV Live S1 specifically, he led the Eagles to two wins behind 15.5PPG, 7RPG and 1.7APG. Look for Costley to be a perfect complement to his backcourt mate Sonny Moore Sonny Moore 6'2" | CG McDonogh | 2028 State MD as a point guard who can set the table, but come through when his number is called.

Costley received a 15-spot boost up to No. 45 and for good reason. The 6’2″ guard will take over the reigns as the floor general for head coach Gerry Abrams this season and he’s spent the spring and summer proving he has the poise, processing and balanced skillset to do so. His summer resume is one that deserves attention, posting an efficient 11.2PPG on 41/46/87 shooting splits while grabbing just under 5RPG and dishing out 2.8APG. His control of the offense brings stability and he’ll be a prospect on the rise as a result in the MIAA A Conference this winter. Costley was also an engine for TTO National 16s and a major piece to their puzzle in earning hardware on the MADE Hoops Circuit this month.

The other piece of this Eagles backcourt is Costley, another prospect out of the Owings Mills school who has drastically improved since the change in the calendar year. Costley has quickly turned into a dependable point guard for head coach Gerry Abrams and has his trust to maintain ball security through pressure while commanding pace, spreading the ball around as a distributor and being able to keep the defense honest with his own scoring prowess. His best outing came in the win over West Nottingham where he recorded a double-double of 20PTS, 10REBS and 4STLS.

-Costley did a great job of attacking closeouts from the wing and coming off of middle ball screens to get two feet in the paint to score off a series of layups, short jumpers, and turn-arounds. Costley came off a screen to hit a 3 from the slot off the bounce, scored off a baseline drive double clutch reverse layup, and is improving his off-ball movement to slide from the middle to the wings and vice versa with the movement of the ball-handler to improve the quality of his looks in the halfcourt. If he can turn some of his down the middle of the defense into kick-out’s for shooters or a reverse pivot to pitch it back to the trail big– he will add another dimension to his arsenal as a point guard that can really fill it up.

Costley is a true point guard in the 2028 class who had the highest impact on winning basketball games throughout the weekend. Costley is a player who does everything on the basketball court. His best skill is his playmaking abilities, as he controls the offense and the pace of the entire game, and sets up his teammates for easy baskets almost every time down the court. He can also score the ball very well, getting to the rim, shooting the three-pointer, and working in the mid-range game. Costley is also a very good on-ball defender who forces turnovers and is a great positional rebounder. Overall, Costley showed that nobody throughout the tournament impacted winning as much as he did, and that he is an extremely underrated guard in the 2028 class.

Maurice Costley is a pass first table setting point guard who constantly looks to get his teammates involved and get them the ball in the right spots on the court and showcased much of that throughout this weekend’s action, making it an emphasis to control the offense and find guys open. However his effectiveness and impact extends beyond his facilitation, where Costley remains a more than capable scoring threat— confident and deft touch from the perimeter as an outside shot maker while countering that shooting ability as a physical downhill slasher attacking driving angles and finishing at the basket, proving to be a dynamic overall playmaker.
