Expert Analysis

Mateen is a phenomenal athlete, having a versatile skillset on the basketball court and the football field. He’s a 6’7″ wing who handles the ball at an elite level, being able to step out and hit the deep shot with no problem. In the post, his footwork stands out by far as well as his ability to get shots off in a variety of different ways. On the football field, I can only imagine he is a dream WR to throw too, having fantastic length, speed, and hands. He could be a college player for either sport.

Usui keeps taking steps forward and his junior year was a big one on both ends of the floor for the 6-foot-7 forward. He continues to expand his offensive repertoire, improving both off the dribble, with his jumper, and adding to his bag on the block. The backbone of his game is rebounding and defense, and he was a big factor on that end in Seattle Select’s latest tournament. He wasn’t necessarily getting a ton of counting stats but played big fighting for tip outs and keeping rebounds alive, contesting almost everything that came in the paint, and did a great job working the glass on the offensive end to extend possessions.

The 6-foot-7 forward has really come on this year, and as of last week was averaging 15 points and 12 rebounds per game while shooting 35% from 3PT. He’s had a couple of big games this month including 19 points and 10 rebounds in a win against Snohomish, and a 25-point 11-rebound game in another victory versus Lynwood. Offensively, he looks a lot more comfortable and readily deploys a variety of moves to get to the basket, both from the perimeter and the blocks. He’s shown he can knock down the three, but he’s also taking guys off the bounce left or right and has demonstrated growth in his ability to attack with his back to the hoop or facing up from closer in. And defensively he continues to remind players of his presence by sending back weak shot attempts.
