Kamauri Lawson
About Kamauri
Expert Analysis
Eric Wallace | Prep Hoops Scout
The Baltimore native is a tough, strong, attacking, lefty lead guard who is the floor general for Head Coach John Zito. The 5’9 senior is an improved perimeter shot maker and a creative finisher in the paint. He gets downhill and can finish around the rim. Lawson is also a capable on-ball defender.

-Few point guards in the area are better defensively than Lawson as he provides voracious POA defense for both his AAU and HS team. His ability to ride his matchup across the floor without being whistled for a foul and force his matchup towards the halfcourt line disrupts his matchup’s offensive flow and forces them to play against a short shot clock. Lawson also has the quickness and leaping ability to block a surprising amount of shots both on or off the ball and he has a nose for the basketball, kick-starting transition possessions with a defensive rebound. The physicality he applies is really disruptive in bumping his matchup off of their driving lines and forces them to pass out to the perimeter or dribble it back out to reset the possession.

16p 6r 2a 5s 7/11 FG vs Fairfax Christian
-Finishing as the third highest rebounder as an undersized point guard isn’t a surprise as it reflects Lawson’s tenacity at both ends of the floor. Lawson does a great job of creating for his teammates with paint touches and Steve Nash drives along the baseline to probe the defense for good passing options. Lawson hit an open 3 but did most of his damage in the paint as a physical driver that understands how to draw and play through body contact around the basket. Love how he leverages his size, strength and quickness to generate turnovers at the opposite end of the floor whether he is on the ball or playing free safety as an effective help defender.

Kamauri Lawson Kamauri Lawson 5'9" | PG Oak Hill | 2026 State VA had a good day for St. Frances on both sides of the ball. Kamauri’s effort today was outstanding, and you saw him be highly effective on the glass. He outworked everyone on the court consistently, and for a guy who is always one of the smallest on the court, he plays with the edge you need at his size. Kamauri didn’t hit many jump shots today, but that is something he does well. He is quick and a very good decision-maker. He had 16 points and 6 rebounds in a win over Fairfax Christian.

-Lawson has been especially productive for a SFA team that feeds off his energy, play-making, and rebounding from the point guard spot. Lawson has a nose for the ball, coming up with some big rebounds in traffic and beating his matchup to long rebounds to ignite the fastbreak for a very good Panther team. Lawson excels at blowing past ball pressure and is really hard to double or hard hedge because he always has his head up and is thinking a few moves ahead of the defense. Lawson is beginning to knock down open looks off the catch on the perimeter to balance out the downhill slashing ability to the rim, if he can consistently hit shots from beyond the arc– the sky is the limit.

6p 5r 4a 3s vs Legacy School
-Lawson returns to SFA after a successful stint at Millford Mill to lead the Panthers as a paint touch merchant that impacts winning beyond the box score. A dynamic rebounder for his size that routinely snags 5-8 rebounds a night from the point guard position, Lawson has a great nose for the ball and has the physicality to beat his opponents to those spots for long rebounds or high-point rebounds in traffic. A physical, quick point guard that leverages his center of gravity, he routinely gets to the center of the defense and dumps it off to one of SFA’s bigs or finds a shooter on the perimeter. His POA defense as a pitbull of a PG that fights around screens to stay in front and will catch you lacking if you put the ball on the floor in front of him– his motor usually is the igniting spark in his team’s lifeblood– which is transition basketball.

-The way Lawson is able to get paint touches creates so many easy looks for his team, both with SFA and Team Melo . The lefty bullies his ways to spots and is always probing the defense to get to the second level to force the helpers to scramble before he can get to the rim. Elite rebounding at his size allows him to start and finish fastbreaks to change ends in less than 5 seconds while extending offensive possessions to give his team a better second look at the basket. When you have a floor general that can give you a minimum of 8p 8r 8a on a given night coming off the bench OR starting, you have a player that can win you games.
