Expert Analysis
Tom Keller | Prep Hoops Scout
Riley plays with an immense deal of versatility the moment he steps onto the floor. He is a threat to guard different positions and length allows him to cover ground with ease. Like how he is able to get downhill and has no issues finding contact and spends a lot of time at the foul line. Kalil connected on easy buckets throughout the weekend. He anticipates the game well. He should see schools get involved if he continues to produce.

The Hillers broke even on the season – in no small part – due to Riley’s tenacity on defense. He would guard the other team’s best player (regardless of position), protect the rim, and get deflections for steals, all in the same game. His offensive output was right behind that. Riley feverishly crashed the boards and got to the hoop off-the-dribble. And when that wasn’t enough, he hit jumpers from all around the arc. Following his junior season up with a good Spring could have him moving up another spot…

Riley’s name has been percolating in the First State throughout the winter as he’s stuffed stat sheets for Tower Hill, but suiting up with several of his Uptown teammates for Werdt’s Warriors gave him his first real opportunity to make a name for himself within Philly hoops circles. The emerging forward was sure to seize the opportunity, showing the lengths of his versatility and explosive athleticism in a dynamic two-way effort. He was able to fly around on defense to make plays all over the floor, showing off what could be a calling card for him as he looks to translate toward the scholarship level. Riley is now firmly on the radar after his Donofrio debut with a chance to generate some real buzz on the AAU scene this spring.

Arguably the breakout performer of the opening night, Riley gave a glimpse of what could be in store in what’s expected to be a further stock-rising campaign on the AAU scene this spring and summer. One of Delaware’s top prospects but still largely an unknown north of the state border, the junior swingman was able to use his explosive athleticism and innate instincts to cause havoc on both ends of the floor. He was a force covering ground and making plays on the defensive end while also flashing hints of skill and some sneaky feel in the floor game. Still 16 years old without much high-level experience under his belt, Riley appears to have significant upside to tap into as he enters into a key offseason.

Riley regularly turns defense into offense by shooting the gap for fastbreak points. He threatens the defense most in the halfcourt when he catches the ball on the move then diving to the hoop for two or curls around a screen for three. In the midst of a major growth spurt, the pressure he puts on the rim will be even more lethal as he works on his finishing in traffic.

After carrying his team through a tough sophomore season and going through some growing pains over the summer, Riley is as intriguing as ever. 6’5 and still getting taller, the young wing can dribble, pass and shoot. Riley has experience as a primary ball-handler. So, when he’s not catching-and-shooting from three, he can attack closeouts then get to the rim and find the open man. Riley’s steal and block numbers are just as impressive. He impacts the defensive end whether he’s on-ball or off.
