Expert Analysis
Ari Rosenfeld | Prep Hoops Scout
Hoping to leave a good final impression on local scouts as he finishes out his senior year, Shaffer followed up a strong season with an explosive display from beyond the arc in an eye-opening performance despite leaving with a tough loss. The swingman shook loose for eight (!!) 3’s, consistently finding open space along the perimeter and showing off his textbook high release off the catch. He has good size for the perimeter and has shown some auxiliary game off the bounce in other settings. Shaffer has some interesting choices in front of him, as he could be a small-college steal or a sneaky late add at the scholarship-level, but also has the option of a prep year on the table having just turned 18 and being on a clear uptick in his development.

A smooth-shooting wing guard, Shaffer has been a key part of the Abington Heights rotation for several years but looks to be playing the best basketball of his career at the right time as he gears up for his senior season. Having filled out substantially over the years, he’s matured into a more fluid athlete as well, allowing him to more effectively complement his catch-and-shoot game with knifing attacks off the bounce. With nice positional size and a clean complementary skillset, Shaffer should draw recruitment from a variety of programs across the D2 and D3 landscape or could be an intriguing option for post-grad programs should he desire an extra year to bolster his development.

Shaffer has been in the rotation since his freshman year for perennial district power Abington Heights, but has really started to put things together as of late heading into what could be a breakout senior season. A rangy shooter who’s demonstrated himself to be dangerous sniper from behind the arc with a smooth and refined stroke, he also shows increasing ability to attack off the bounce and finish with craft near the rim. He’s started to turn the corner physically and athletically after going through a bit of an awkward phase, and being young for his grade, could have more physical upside left to tap into moving forward. Scholarship-level and small-college coaches alike should be getting eyes on him regularly beginning this month.

Tour” continued this past weekend at Spooky Nook as Shaffer drained 6 threes on his way to 22 points against BTI HGSL. When he was not splashing threes over defenders and at times double teams, Shaffer worked as a primary ball handler. He patiently directed half-court sets and pushed the rock in transition for scores as well as assists. College coaches will love the fact that Shaffer competed on the boards all weekend. His size and positioning skills make Shaffer a plus rebounder at both ends. His ability to grab a defensive rebound and the go coast-to-coast is unique.

Shaffer posted a tremendous junior season (17 ppg. & 6 rpg.) and was a standout during the April HGSL slate. Thus, it should not be a surprise that he is a prospect to watch here in May. He is a versatile guard prospect with an automatic jump shot, a knack for rebounding and a high IQ. As a perimeter shooter, Shaffer’s quick trigger and non-stop off ball movements present serious issues for opponents. At 6’4” and with decent hops, Shaffer has no problem shooting over defenders or even double teams. If needed, Shaffer can slide to the point guard spot and provide secure ball handling as well as creative distributing. As a bonus to hos scoring skills, Shaffer is one of top rebounding guards we have seen this spring.

, Shaffer quietly assembled an outstanding stretch of runs at the Pitt Jam Fest. Included in Shaffer’s stellar play this past weekend was a game where he drained 4 threes on his way to 14 points. Shaffer is a long and athletic wing prospect with a highly accurate three-point shot. His quick release, NBA range and ability to shoot over defenders made Shaffer extremely difficult to guard around the arc. His shot was automatic from inside the arc too as he knocked home pull ups and runners. College coaches will love Shaffer’s high IQ and non-stop motor.
