Expert Analysis
Jay Frye | Prep Hoops Scout
Williams’ McDonald’s All-American nomination is rooted in defensive intensity and athletic presence at the guard position. He consistently sets the tone on the perimeter with tenacious on-ball defense, applying pressure, disrupting rhythm, and forcing opponents into uncomfortable possessions. His athleticism allows him to recover, contest, and stay engaged through multiple actions, making him a difficult matchup for primary ball handlers. That ability to consistently impact games defensively—especially against high-level competition—is what separates him and justifies national recognition.

is a score-first guard who just keeps coming at you with full intensity. The lefty showcased a strong first step that got him a step away from the lane, where he could finish from a low, high, or wide angles. In transition, as the defense attempted to set up, Williams stopped on a dime with a smooth misdirection dribble into a pull-up three-pointer off the bounce. Defensively, Williams pressured the ball with discipline the full length of the court, hounding ball-handlers and taking away spacing the moment they crossed halfcourt, causing a five-second violation and generating takeaways on the next pass.

Jonathan is an incredibly quick, efficient point guard that makes his opponents pay regularly on the defensive end. He’s unbelievably fast off the dribble and he pairs that with an elite ballhandling ability that can make him seemingly unstoppable. He can drive either direction on his opposition with ease and he’s an artist in the air – contorting his body every which way and going up and under shot-blockers to get himself clear, high-percentage opportunities. He’s fantastic at following through and finishing through contact, consistently racking up extra points for his team. He’s not a high flyer, but he doesn’t need to be with some of the most impressive horizontal hang time I’ve seen in recent memory. He’ll jump from around the charity stripe and somehow be in the air long enough to go with his second or third option on his shot attempt. His awareness off the dribble is amazing and he elevates his teammates throughout his games – a true floor general. Can’t wait to see all the deserved attention Williams gets this season and beyond.

showcased a fantastic ability to operate in tight spaces. He often maintained a low base by playing off two feet and staying under control. Williams was the type of point guard who looked to penetrate the defense and get paint touches. Not only did he create opportunities for kick-outs as the defense collapsed, but he also scored effectively. His creative use of body and hang time allowed him to adjust to any defenders midair.
