Hawkins popped on my radar late last summer when he stood out at our Prep Hoops Expo event as a lethal shooter from deep. The relative of current New Orleans Pelican Jordan Hawkins, Jevon is starting to embody the same mindset as a scorer and has seemed to grow about two inches over the last 8-10 months. The confidence is evident as he pulled the trigger in the face of his defender on a handful of occasions with good results. He isn’t the type that looks for the highlights or celebrates after a cold-blooded jumper. He goes about his business like he expects to make it. While he was strictly just a catch-and-shoot threat back in late summer, it was good to see his skill off the bounce in getting to spots within the mid-range area where he’d rise up for two’s, maneuver his way to the basket for feathery soft floaters or make the correct primary read on the dribble drive attack.

is a 6-foot-3 combo guard playing for Avalon in Maryland. Hawkins averaged a very impressive 24 points per game as a sophomore last season, making him a must-watch next season. He’s not super undersized for the position and potentially has some growing left to do, which can only complement his shot-making and ball-handling ability. Scoring aside, one thing that also stands out about him is how active he is in passing lanes, averaging over 2 steals per game last season.

Hawkins continues to shine and progress as a prospect, as Prep Hoops would be keeping a strong eye on him this season and this summer; he could be in for as a breakout player in the Class of 2028. Hawkins has getting bigger and stronger as a player, but he is such an effective weapon with his shot-making ability and overall game. He has a smooth feel and a ton of confidence in his ability to score, picking his spots, and scoring from multiple levels; at times, you are more surprised when he misses than when he makes. But you can see that he is still developing overall in his game, and there is a lot to like about his potential as a prospect, as he showed that once again at this event.

-Hawkins has been on an absolute heater in the early stages of the season, with 30+ scoring outbursts in 4/10 games– highlighted by a 37 point game against Clinton Grace Regional. Hawkins is a pretty nuclear shooter that can create his own shot off the bounce but has also really improved his movement shooting or simple C+S opportunities from both the midrange and 3 point levels. The handle has improved as has is burst OTB to make him more of a threat as not just a shooter but a scorer.

Jevon has shown on many occasions that he is a special young talent. He can shoot the thread off the ball and will heat up in a hurry. Makes the defense pay with almost all his open looks. Jevon will be forced to put the ball down more as defenses begin to hone in on his shooting ability, but he has shown he can use the dribble to create space off of hard closeouts. Real chance to become a major piece to a college program.

Jevon was rightfully added to our Prep Hoops Second Team for his production Sunday. He was a deadly spot-up shooter every time he stepped on the court. Jevon knocked down shot after shot with or without a contest. He was almost just as efficient off the dribble, showing his skill in taking minimal dribbles to get the shot he wanted. Was able to finish layups strong. Jevon had the rare skill of knowing exactly where to be available along the perimeter, staying ready to catch and fire at all times. Nice size and skill already as he enters his first season with Avalon.

Hawkins seems primed for a nice season at Avalon as a sophomore and it all starts with his long-range shooting ability. The little cousin of current New Orleans Pelican guard Jordan Hawkins, Jevon spent the afternoon filling it up from beyond the arc whether or not a hand was in his face. He made his first few off the catch, but as the defense adjusted and crowded him in the ensuing possessions, Hawkins got the ball into space and was able to comfortably get into his shot off the dribble with the same results. He’s quiet, but he has a cold-blooded mentality when it comes to making his defender’s day a tough one at the office.

Jevon is an intriguing young guard with some nice skill. He can shoot the ball and dribble well which he put on display for TTO early this summer. Jevon, younger brother of NBA guard Jordan Hawkins, shows some similarities in his game. Flashy and smooth handle that can shake his defender off him. Already a confident shooter that believes in his ability to shoot from outside and closer in. Has a real shot of becoming one of Maryland’s most recruited guards by the time he is a senior.
