Nelson is a unique matchup problem at 6’5” with guard skills, and he’s continued to show why he’s one of the more intriguing players we’ve watched this spring. His combination of size and ball-handling ability allows him to put constant pressure on opposing defenders, as he can create his own offense and get to his spots with confidence. He does a great job planting his foot and rising into quick pull-up jumpers, while also showing the ability to knock down shots consistently from beyond the arc. Defenders have a difficult time contesting his shot because of his length and elevation. On the defensive end, his size becomes just as valuable, allowing him to impact the game with rebounds and blocked shots. Those defensive plays often spark transition opportunities, where he can push the pace or create easy scoring chances for his team. Nelson’s versatility on both ends continues to make him a standout performer
Nelson found another gear once the season reached the midway point and became one of the more consistent producers down the stretch. He caught fire offensively, regularly scoring in double figures while mixing in a couple of double double performances. Around the basket he is a tough matchup because of his strength and ability to operate in tight spaces with his back to the rim. He understands how to seal defenders, create angles and finish through contact. What adds even more value to his game is a smooth jumper that keeps defenses honest when he steps away from the paint. He also works relentlessly on the glass, using effort and positioning to secure rebounds on both ends
Nelson made the most of his expanded role at Moffat County and turned January into a breakout stretch. With increased minutes and responsibility, he brought steady production and a physical presence to the lineup. His 6’4” frame allowed him to anchor the paint on both ends, finishing through contact and battling on the boards. Offensively he showed growing confidence, recording five double figure scoring games and pouring in a season high 24 points. He also proved he can impact the game beyond scoring, posting a double double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Nelson’s consistency and interior toughness gave Moffat County a reliable option as the season moved into a critical stretch
Nelson jumps off the watch list and into the rankings with his play through 6 games. He’s an inside force who plays with physicality, is a force on the boards, and understands what is asked of him on the floor. He’s a confident inside scorer with solid size, and his work on the glass as of late has been one of the bright spots for the team. He’s averaging 7.2 rebounds a game while offering consistency down low. He’s a player who hasn’t gotten much attention but is rising.
At 6’3, Nelson runs the floor, protects the paint, and finishes with rebounding and putback opportunities. He was the only freshman on varsity, gaining valuable experience after dominating JV. He can guard multiple spots, rebound, and disrupt inside, but now it’s about bringing that same aggressiveness to the varsity level. The showcase is the perfect place to see how much his game has grown and if he can assert himself against other big, skilled guards in his class.
