Expert Analysis
Ryan Morgan | Prep Hoops Scout
Matthews has had a great spring, looking more aggressive with his touches, and doing a better job of attacking closeouts and showing strength by the rim. He has a pure lefty stroke from 3-point range and has shot 39.6% from distance on 6.6 attempts a game over two EYCL sessions. We saw a lot of that outside shooting during the winter season, so the real growth has been his play around the cup. He shot 83.3% from the foul line on 3.0 attempts a game over the first session, and although the number of attempts dropped off in the second session, his rebounds went up from 4.0 in session one, to 5.5 in session two, including an 18-point 10-rebound double-double.

Matthews has shown big-time flashes in his first season at AMV, and this game was a good representation of his progress. He’s mainly stood out for his shooting, and he went 3-for-3 behind the arc yesterday, but he also showed improvement as a rebounder and defender, which will be vital in the young wings’ development.

One more talented sophomore who will be at a new school this winter, Matthews moves to Auburn Mountainview after spending last year at Oak Harbor. He’s already made a big impression with his athleticism and ability to hit from 3-point range this summer. He should get plenty of opportunities to round out his game this season, but he’s a kid to keep tabs on who has the potential to be among the best in his class.

Matthews is a sneaky athlete from the wings who has the bounce to finish up high and the range to keep defenders honest on the perimeter. He’s shown he can heat up in a hurry from downtown and has some real game-changing ability to swing momentum with his ability to score in flurries. He’s starting to figure it out defensively too and shows a pretty well-rounded potential to affect the game in a lot of ways.

Jarrick has solid size already for a freshman and should see a decent role on the varsity squad for Oak Harbor. He hustles hard every possession, diving for loose balls and always going 100% on both ends. He attacks well, being able to use his speed and length to get by defenders at a high rate.
