The second Newport prospect on this list, Turner is an elite rim protector and rim runner as a big. Playing alongside Kinney both during their early high school days and this summer for Wildcat Select, Turner is a point guard’s best friend as a roller. We’ll see what Turner can do for AZ Compass Prep this season, he’ll likely be used as a play finisher and see a similar role at the college level as well.

James is an intriguing player because he has the physical skills to be a big time impact player and has earned a bunch of D1 offers. He’s also been known to disappear at times during the AAU season when he’s surrounded by more talent. I would argue that’s more to a lack of assertiveness than due to any lack of talent, etc. Turner has a chance to really turn it on this next year and show why he’s been so highly recruited up to now. I expect his stock to trend up, long term.

Turner’s life got way easier for Newport with the addition of Rondon as now he has a point guard who can find him on lobs and as a rim runner. Similar to how Luka Doncic and Dereck Lively ran the pick and roll, Rondon and Turner have that sort of connection. With a point guard setting the table for him, Turner can focus on rim running, blocking shots and playing with energy. A Division I target, it’ll be interesting to see where Turner’s recruitment winds up this summer.

Newport got dominated by Bryan Station but Turner was an easy choice for a standout player despite the loss. Early in the game, Turner had a nice drive where he spun and finished with his left hand. He also had a dunk and right-handed finish off a drive. On the defensive end of the court was where he really shined. The box score only credited him with four blocks but I thought he had at least five in the first half alone. Turner was protecting the rim with his length and timing to contest guards looking to get to the basket. Turner also did this without fouling very often, a tough skill for young bigs to master. Turner is a Division I target who will be closely monitored by regional programs this summer.

Turner may have the most potential of any player in this tournament. He has elite athleticism with great size and has the ability to take over the game on both sides of the ball, especially defensively. In a pinch, he can guard 1-5 because of his quickness, but he makes it extremely hard for anyone to score at the rim. When sprinting the floor in transition, he can beat any big man that guards him down the floor to get easy baskets. On top of it all, he has 3pt range off the catch. Big time prospect.

Turner’s production has dipped thanks to a loaded roster at Newport. James still has great long term production but his lack of rebounding is a little concerning, considering how tall and athletic he is. This spring and summer will be a big opportunity to justify James’ early offers and potentially earn more.
