Memorial’s workhorse finished strong in a valiant comeback effort for the Chargers vs a tough 6A opponent. Remains a “chairman of the boards” type with his effort, focus and athleticism to make tough rebounds on both ends of the court. After a slow start scoring wise, he got it going from distance. Which has been a nice addition to his tough post game. Rebounding and three point shooting are traits that are often appealing to college coaches.

Cotton was his usual energetic self in a Saturday morning contest. What was interesting about his game was the steps he’s made as a ball handler. He’s becoming more confident in face up situations and even pushing it himself after he secures a rebound. One of those instances ended with him driving, getting a paint touch and kicking to a teammate who knocked down a three. That and hitting jumpers indicate that his is game evolving to be more than a blue collar forward. One drawback to his game on Saturday, he must improve his touch around the rim. As he left some points on the board with misses on drives and other contested looks. Cleaning that up will be paramount for Cotton to help lead the Chargers to a Class 5A State Tournament appearance, after they missed last year for the first time in a decade.

Another game, another double double for Cotton. The long armed forward prospect continues to embrace his role as the garbage man around the rim, with high level rebounding on both ends of the court. What makes him so effective as a rebounder on the offensive end is he combination of a long wingspan and a quality second jump. Both traits that will suit him well at the next level, allowing him to compete against bigger prospects.

A marker in the developmental for the promising forward prospect this year was to turn into an automatic double double. Cotton is just shy of doing that with his season long averages of 13.3 points and 9.8 rebounds. But just last night he had a huge 21 point and 12 rebound performance in a pivotal district win. His raw ability with size, power, good vertical explosiveness are some of the key factors in how the blue collar forward produces for the Chargers. They will also get his foot in the door as a potential collegiate level player. But he’s also shown good signs of developing a face up and floor stretching game. Which would help raise the ceiling of Cotton’s college potential.

The only Charger in double figures, Cotton was a strong finisher at the rim, who was extremely active in blocking shots and grabbing boards on defense. As a bouncy 6 foot 6 prospect, just those traits would be enough to view as a promising college prospect. But he also had some moments as a face up forward, with a couple good drives, nailing a free throw line jumper, and even making a good kickout pass when the defense collapsed.
Memorial’s identity this season will likely be built around grit, defense and toughness and Cotton is a great representation of that.

Recently covered as one of the players with the most upside in the Class of 2025. Cotton is one of the few players with returning experience with the Chargers. He averaged 4 points and 4 rebounds this past season, with the expectations that he will easily eclipse those numbers this year. With a physical frame and athleticism to match, Cotton will be a regular double double threat while also anchoring Memorial’s defense.
