He had an exceptional all-around performance in a winner-to-state game against Curtis last week. He was steadily putting in buckets, using good footwork off of screens as well as relocating off drives to find space on the perimeter for quick trigger 3s. Sonntag was also a critical piece on the boards, exhibiting the hustle and desire to do the little things to win with your back against the wall. And he was also doing it on the defensive end, anticipating some of Curtis’s sets, drawing a big charge at the rim, and competing against some of the better scorers in his league.

I was a few minutes late to this game so I don’t know how many points he had. What I do know is that he has in the gym range. He knocked down several threes from way out. He also rebounds and is an all around player who was one of the best shooters in the tournament. rn

Isaiah “Shoot your Shot” Sonntag
Sonntag was an all-league player last season and has replicated that form, helping Puyallup to a pace that would triple their win total from 2021-22. He’s still a deadeye from deep but he’s also been a leader for a young cast around him, setting an example on both ends of the floor. His nickname is “Shoot your shot” not just because he hit six 3-pointers in their game against Kentlake (four-straight in the first half), but because he doesn’t force his looks and shows great confidence in his freshmen and sophomore teammates to do their jobs.

Sonntag is a quiet riser. Although he was an all-league player last season, he doesn’t play a flashy game and doesn’t do a lot that wow’s you on the court, except for his outstanding consistency. Consistency doesn’t necessarily grab the headlines, but it does leave an impression on opposing coaches who know each time out they have to gameplan for Sonntag. He’s able to do a lot of little things on the court but his biggest asset could be his shooting. He’s expanded his range this season and always seems to have that solid foundation that great shooters have.

Puyallup went just 4-13 last season and although this season opened up with another loss to Todd Beamer, this Vikings team has a different feel than last year’s. One main reason for that is

. The 2021-22 NPSL second-team selection showed off some deep range in their season opener. It wasn’t just a one-off thing either, Sonntag hit from a couple feet behind the arc on multiple occasions, contested and with relative ease. He still operates with an excellent array of moves from the triple threat and has the size and strength to take other guards to the post. It feels like Sonntag has more options to help carry the load this season which could help him find easier looks and produce at a higher level.

Sonntag made second-team all-league in the SPSL North last season as a sophomore. It was a struggle for his team to get going, finishing 4-15, but Sonntag showed immense promise as a guard that uses his strength and patience to get buckets. He has a quick first step and once he has defenders on his hip he does a good job keeping them there as he navigates his way to the rim. He’s really good at gaining position off the dribble and using stop-and-go bursts to win matchups. Sonntag will pair with fellow 2024 Carsen Lovett to give Puyallup a more competitive look next season.
