Expert Analysis
Sam Duren | Prep Hoops Scout
Franz got the Owls off to a strong start with a full display of his abilities. He’s always been a smart passer, with good handles who can run an offense and set up his teammates. He did that, but also got busy as a scorer. Looked a tick faster and stronger on drives, or maybe just more confident. Then was also cooking with stepback threes and other more advanced moves. Franz clearly has put in the time and taken advantage of the reps in order to improve his scoring abilities.

Franz has been known as a rocky steady three year contributor in Class 6A. Quality all around guard, who can push the pace or run the show in the halfcourt. Has been a strong shooter from three since his freshman year. Sneaky as driver, as he’s shifty with a plus wingspan. Often has looked unflappable with the ball in his hands. Committed to Maine.

Franz is a point guard who picks his spots, on Saturday morning the spot he picked was to win the game. In the closing seconds, the final possession looked lost, but the junior never lost his cool and eventually got to the rim and finished through contact at the buzzer. Then in the second contest, he carried the momentum of his heroics into a more scoring focused game. Routinely broke defender’s ankles to gain separation for pull up jumpers. Showing that the same steady handles that help run the show for Memorial, can play faster and with flair. Is now established as one of the more well rounded guards in the Class of 2026.

Edmond Memorial looked strong against a Tulsa squad filled with athletes and size. Franz was the man at the controls and once again rarely looked flustered. His ability to run the Bulldogs’ offense and get teammates involved continues to be impressive. But there’s flashes of the spontaneity needed to change games. One of those flashes today was a great contested mid-range make that the defenders could only tip their caps to Franz.

Running with a quality AAO Flight team from Arkansas, Franz has a rock solid sophomore campaign as a composed and controlled lead guard at Edmond Memorial. While he’s a skilled conductor of half court offenses, who is nearly never flustered, the rising sophomore also can play with an edge. With the pace to play faster and flashes of the quicker twitch moves to be a more dynamic scorer. Keep an eye on Franz to make noise in Wichita this weekend.

Franz opened the game showing he’s comfortable operating off the ball. He flared to the top of the key and in one quick, fluid motion caught a passed and drained a three pointer to open his scoring. Unfortunately for the Bulldogs, the sophomore struggled with his shooting from distance the rest of the contest. But that didn’t discourage the composed guard, as he was able to get downhill against the trees Owasso has for forwards. He has a knack for finishing high on drives, getting good arc and favorable bounces on his layup attempts. With developing leadership and playmaking skills to go along with his rock solid scoring abilities, he continues to impact the game like an upperclassman and not just a sophomore.

One of the top floor generals in the class, Franz already has an advance reading of the game on both ends of the court. He has often looked unflappable for Edmond Memorial, with a comfortability at slowing the game down, or handling the quickness and pace that comes with playing faster teams. Franz can shoot it well off the dribble and is sneaky with how he can get off shots in traffic around the rim. He brings the same intensity and tenacity to the defensive end, making him one of the most well rounded guards in Oklahoma’s Class of 2026.

One of the toughest tests for younger guards is playing against teams with different styles, especially a fast paced squad when they’re used to playing a slower tempo. Franz passed the test with flying colors as he quarterbacked a come from behind victory in the fourth quarter to send his Bulldogs to the finals of the Edmond Open. He was often picked up 94 feet and he was never flustered or looked tired. It was particular impressive how quick and controlled his spin moves and other counters were to gain separation to bring the ball up the court and get Edmond Memorial into their sets. He scored big buckets throughout, hitting the occasional three and even scored a huge go ahead score in the closing moments off one of Memorial’s seemingly trademark halfcourt actions. The sophomore also matched his opponents disruptive energy on the defensive end, as he mixed a combination of moving his feet fundamentals and opportunistic quick hands.
Franz and his teammates have another big test on Saturday night, but with the sophomore playing with poise beyond his young years they’ll have a chance to gain momentum going into the second half of district play.
