Will Armishaw | Prep Hoops Scout
Gray, out of Bridgeport Prep in Connecticut, checks in at #13 among the point guards and #103 overall. The post-graduate does a great job of controlling a game on the offensive end of the floor, while also creating havoc defensively. He does a nice job of changing speeds, uses the bounce to keep defenders off balance, and shows good vision in transition. He can knock down shots in catch and shoot situations, has the ability to finish with creativity around the basket, and does a great job of delivering passes into teammates shooting pockets. Defensively, he mixes it up in the paint, hits the floor for loose balls, and makes plays in passing lanes. He’s uncommitted right now and is a prospect that should have plenty of options come the spring.

One of the best players in the CIAC last year while averaging over 20 points and 6 assists for St. Bernard, Gray has picked up right where he left off since sliding across the state for his post-grad year. With Bridgeport facing a nearly 20-point deficit early in the third quarter, Gray flipped a switch and changed the entire tenor of the game, scoring 11 of his 15 points in the third quarter to will his team back into the game and set up a nip-tuck fourth quarter that would end in a buzzer-beating championship win. A tough-nosed lead guard, Gray ran the team with energy and natural leadership traits, showcasing a blend of burst and craft while navigating downhill with the ability to keep defenses honest as a dependable shooter from the arc. He’s a tailor made fit for Bridgeport’s fullcourt press, flying around en route to six steals on Sunday to kickstart the transition attack going the other way. Gray may not be the sexiest, but his clean skillset and no-nonsense approach on both ends of the floor is bound to make a scholarship-level program happy in due time.

-By far the best passer that I saw this weekend, Gray plays with great pace and pushed the tempo to get easy buckets in transition to put the game out of reach. He has the ball on a string, is really hard to trap/double team, and takes care of the ball in traffic. I saw the full repertoire of passes throughout the evening: lobs from halfcourt, pocket passes in middle PnR, chest passes over the top to lead his teammate to the rim, baseline bounce passes, wrap arounds, etc– he always has his head on a swivel. Gray also applies a ton of ball pressure and rips away steals without being whistled for fouls to initiate a brand new fastbreak. Loved his game as a throwback pure PG that knows exactly where the ball needs to be placed for each of his teammates and creating advantage opportunities for his team without a ball screen or a set play.

Gray dazzled with his scoring pop finding a variety of ways to put the ball in the bucket. He scored from all three levels. He had several assists and has no issues finding his teammates for scoring looks of their own. He turned defense to offense and was in driving and passing lanes. Gray should be a priority recruit and the small college level.

He’s the definition of a true point guard, smart, decisive, and composed. He knocked down a pull-up three, consistently made quick decisions to get into the paint and execute, and displayed excellent vision by finding the open man on a baseline drive that led to a dunk. He serves as the Quarterback of the team.

Gray impressed with his quick twitch scoring. He filled it up from an array of spots on the floor. Gray had no problems wiggling his way to downhill to get paint touches. Gray shows some craftiness with the rock in his hands. He has a good vision of the floor and set up others frequently. He should coaches monitoring him through the summer live periods.

was stunning as a passer and looked the part as a true table-setting point guard. He was finding his teammates on the break, moving the ball right on the money and straight into their hands for easy scores at the cup. His passing also translated in the half-court setting too, driving and kicking and finding the open man seemingly every time, even pulling off a behind-the-back dime. He also made long outlet passes as well which further pushed the pace for his team and led to consistent pressure that the defense had to deal with. Furthermore, he was rebounding on the offensive glass, playing hard guarding on the ball, and spacing the floor from deep off the catch.

Gray is an explosive athlete who can really elevate at the rim for finishes. He’s got a burst of quickness and can also fly when he has room to jump. Most impressive, though, was Gray’s passing ability and vision once the defense collapsed on him in the paint. Size will be a limiting factor for him, but I bet Gray will find a college home somewhere.
