Cantave was super impressive this weekend for BABC”s 16u squad. The 6-foot-3 guard always goes so quickly off the catch, so he’s difficult to stay in front of with a head of steam towards the rim. At the hoop, he has a knack for finishing with both his right and left hand, whether it be with contact or out ahead with a rear-view contest; he has long strides and excellent footwork. I also love how he plays on the defensive end. He’s excellent in the passing lanes and moves his feet quite well laterally, so he’s a great player on that end both on and away from the ball. Cantave needs to improve his three-point shooting and free-throw confidence, but he has lots of time to do so and should get tons of reps this season for BABC.

His attributes include communication on defense which is a must for me. He has good length which is helpful to impact passes and shots like he does. At the guard position you have to be able to use the off hand and he is comfortable with the opposite hand. He had a great hangtime on a reverse under the hoop baseline drive layup made field goal. He can knock down shots from behind the arc. His IQ was intriguing as he was able to make a great decision to slow the tempo when action was chaotic on transition offense. The best part of his IQ was that fact in a 1-2-2 press he sat back and allowed a timing play to develop to trap the offense. D1 schools should start looking at him.

Cantave is part of a talented young core at St. George’s, but he’s ready to make an impact right now as a sophomore. The 6-foot-1 point guard is incredibly athletic with the ball in his hands and finishes quite well at the hoop once he gets there. The southpaw has awesome touch high off the glass with his left hand but also can convert with his right, even with some contact. Cantave’s also able to hit the outside shot and is electric on the fastbreak with a head of steam. He’s ready to play at the prep school level right now, and I think he’s going to have a significant role for St. George’s this season.

was electric playing on the ball. He was dishing dimes in the half court to set the tone early. He then started to score with aggressive drives and side step threes. His defense was superb too, making blocks and steals intensely.

showed flashes of his high potential by demonstrating a great feel for the game. He made some outstanding assists in transition, baiting opposing defenders to find his wide-open teammates on the three-point line. He showcased his speed by getting into the lane for easy layups and also coming out of nowhere to make an impressive steal in the half-court. His ability to play up-tempo while also playing smart should bode well for his future on the basketball court, especially when his role starts to increase in future years.

Cantave, another talented lead guard, enters his first year in the NEPSAC looking to make an impact on a talented St. George’s squad. A shifty ball-handler, Cantave is capable of scoring in the paint in a variety of ways. He’s a plus athlete that has good positional size and great length and has just started to capitalize on some of his physical gifts. He’s crafty, can finish through contact at the rim, and does a nice job of scoring in the mid-range. His burst with the ball in his hands and ability to get past the initial defender off the bounce allows him to be a creator in the half court. Defensively, he can guard any spot on the perimeter with his combination of great length and above average lateral mobility. He should continue to get better day in and day out and has a chance to be a high level recruit down the road.
