When you watch as many games as we do, no matter how organized we are there are always going to be kids that we forget. While we did 100 prospects in the latest rankings (we plan to go up to 125 or 150 in the next ones), there were quite a few I realized I forgot as soon as they were done. Here’s a look at some of them.
Tyler Murray | 6’2” PG | Veritas Collegiate
Murray is a gifted young point guard that I forgot in the rankings because I only got to see Veritas once very early in the season. He’s a long guard that’s likely still growing, he’s smooth off the bounce and he’s able to score it from multiple levels. He has some growing to do as a true lead guard but he’s got a lot to work with moving forward.
Corey Farmer | 6’4” PF | Hargrave
Farmer is a Danville native who made the short trip to Hargrave and was one of their best guys off the bench for them this year. He’s a very strong post who’s able to use his strength to overpower taller guys in the paint and he plays with a good motor on both ends of the floor. He has a lot of room to get better and will likely take a big leap next year with more opportunities.
Dallas Kendall | 6’7” PF | Menchville
Kendall is a prospect that is chock full of potential and while he didn’t play much for a very talented Menchville team this year he’s got a chance to be very good moving forward. He needs to put on weight but he’s long and mobile, he has good touch out to the perimeter and he’s a natural rim protector. He has the tools to be a versatile defender and should be a breakout guy moving forward.
Spencer Hamilton | 6’9” PF | Perry McCluer
Hamilton is emerging as one of the top prospects in the Roanoke area after his breakout season at Perry McCluer where he helped them reach the state tournament this year. At 6’9” and likely still growing, Hamilton is a guy who can dominate inside-out with his ability to run the floor, protect the rim and shoot it from deep. He needs to continue to get stronger but he has a skill set at his size that is very intriguing and is highly productive as well.
Daveon Cassaboom | 6’4” PF | William Byrd
Cassaboom is quietly one of the best glue guys in the Roanoke area with his all out energy and ability to make an impact in ways other than scoring. He’s a strong post who can dominate the paint on both ends, he’s deceptively athletic for his size and he plays with a good motor making him productive in his minutes he plays. He’s a guy who should have a good season next year with improvement and growth.
Reggie Robertson | 5’8” PG | John Marshall
Robertson’s a guy I’m really upset I forgot because he’s in my backyard and he had some great moments for JM on their state championship run. He isn’t the biggest guy but he’s tough as nails, he competes on both ends of the floor and he’s a guy who gets hot and can fill it up quickly off the bench. In their game against nationally ranked Sierra Canyon, he gave a huge spark off the bench with his three-point shooting and toughness, showing he isn’t afraid of the biggest situations either.
Patrick Clevenger | 6’5” WF | James River (Buchanan)
Clevenger is part of a young James River group that should be a force moving forward and will be one of the best shooting teams in the western part of the state next year. He’s a wing that has good size and good touch as he’s a consistent threat from beyond the arc, and he’s a hard worker who has been improving quite a lot from what I’ve been told. His size and skill set makes him one of the toughest guys in that area to match up with.
Nate Weasley | 5’11” PG | Radford
Radford had a “rebuilding” year by their standards as they weren’t the best team in the Roanoke/New River Valley area this year, but they have some emerging talent that will continue to grow and get better as a group. One of those guys is Weasley, who took over much of the ball handling duty and showed he’s got a chance to be a two way impact guy moving forward. He’s very long and a good athlete, he has a good feel for the game and he makes some tough passes look very easy.
